AFAIK it's just the stuff that's re-released from the old consoles on PSN/XBL/VC. I loved these types of games.

They often remake old ones with better graphics. A lot are on XBL.

It's a side scroller and a lot of fun - Shadow Complex. Try the trial :) I had a lot of fun in this game.

Edit - it's for XBLA

If you haven't played it yet, there's Ikaruga on XBLA and if you're really hardcore, there's castle of shikigami on the Wii that was released recently.

You mentioned R-Type and Gradius so how about some japanese shooters on the 360? On xbox live arcade there is R-Type Dimensions (parts 1 and 2 together in one package). If you like vertical arcade shooters try out Raiden IV and Raiden Fighters Aces for the 360. There are some remakes on xbox live arcade too like Galaga Legions and Space Invaders Extreme.

For action sidescrollers you have the metroid style Shadow Complex, the action game Castle Crashers, a bunch of Genesis ports like Streets of Rage 1 and 2..etc.

I can think of a couple of the top of my head. Bionic Commando Rearmed for the 360/PS3 and Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero for PSP.

TMNT turtles in time was re-released for PSN, updated graphics. Short though.

No mention of Braid? What about Little Big Planet?

I assume the OP was talking specifically about shooters. How did you browse the Xbox library and not find much? Geometry Wars?
