Classes that supposedly "don't count" in college

Say you're in a math class that is so low that they don't even accept it or factor it into your GPA (talking about a community college here). But it still does show up on your transcript. Do you think it'll hurt at all, although the counselors all say they don't count it? Especially if you prove you can take the next level of math and pass with flying colors.

Basically
1. Friend gets F in low level math, but math class isn't transferable
2. Friend thinks they are fvcked when trying to transfer

If you do ok in the NEXT math, the lower one will not really matter.

Pre-college courses will (at least in instances I have seen). It would look bad to get less than an A in remedial math or English :Q

if you have the aptitude to "pass [the higher level class] with flying colors," why wasn't there any effort put into the low-level class? that would be viewed as a problem if one tries to transfer.
