Classes are canceled tomorrow. Anyone else affected by the ice?

I'm at the University of Texas at Austin and they just sent out emails saying that the school would be closed tomorrow due to all the icy weather in the area.

Anybody else affected by the ice?

Edit: for those who laugh at the ice claims

Here are a few pics from my drive to Austin. There must have been a flipped over truck every few miles for most of the 400 mile trip.

How bad can ice get in Texas? At the University of Illinois, we never got anything off no matter what the weather. Snow, ice, hurricaine? Even once with tornados in the county we still had classes.

Ah well. I had to resort to table salt today to get the ice off my vehicle's windshield, it was that thick.

when a bad ice storm only happens every couple years, it's not exactly uncommon to cancel classes. you northerners are used to "bad" weather in the winter, and thus are continually prepared for it. the same isn't true for southern states. don't see why you're "rofling" at it.

ours are on, despite the fact that in the college communications e-mail it says "Use extreme caution when traveling to school" ... "2 of the bus routes will be canceled until further notice" ... and "Any instructors unable to make it to campus should notify whoever" ...

Yea let's make all the students get killed on the way to campus.

two teachers said if you feel you can't make it don't come, and quizzes will be made up if you need to

Some dumb kid in a neon almost t-boned us while we were out driving this afternoon to get some milk. We came to the intersection and I saw him sliding with his tires completely locked up, and I said "Oh Sh1t" but my brain quickly calculated that he would either stop just short or hit behind the passenger side so I didn't really panic I just stared and wondered what it would be like getting t-boned in the rear quarter panel. The look as his face as he made eye contact with me staring at him was fvcking CLASSIC. He was totally panicking in that car.

Ha! I've been going to school here a week and this area has a lot of hills, all covered in ice every day. What kind of college cancels class because of ice? Aren't most students within walking distance to campus?

I know its mean, but I always get a real kick out of watching people from down south try to drive on snow & ice... as long as its on TV, not from the driver seat of my car!

Where I am there is 3 inches of solid ice in the yard/street out front, you could ice skate if you were so inclined.

I live in California and these people have no clue how to even drive when it's raining.

I doubt there will be school here tomorrow either. It has snowed most of the day, and the plows can't get to the side roads.

For something that happens maybe once or twice a year? No thanks.

But yea, it's true, if there's any chance of freezing rain in texas, you can bet your ass everything's canceled.

I just drove 400 miles across Texas to get here. We were driving 20mph for a good portion of the time because the roads were so icy. There were quite a few (at least 50) flipped over trucks on the way.

It might not be as bad as it is up north, but you guys have procedures in place to deal with it. We don't down here.

With all the raised pickup trucks in Texas, I don't think I want to chance my Acura RSX in the ice on the I-10 going to downtown Houston if it's really bad.

Getting winter tires in Southeast Texas is a waste of money, and would be pointless cause there will be a million other cars who DON'T have them.

That's true. We have the giant pile of salt. And this pile gets non-stop media coverage every snowstorm. The first storm of the year is quite the media event.

One failure to clear the roads after a sudden snowstorm several decades ago cost a Chicago mayor re-election. Ever since, armies of snow-plows have been in full force in preperation of every little snow accumulation.

Not many sand trucks in Texas, and no salt AFAIK. I've lived in Texas most of my life, and when I was in Yellowstone this fall I had no problems in the snow/ice because they have the infastructure there.
