Class Network Project

In a couple weeks I will be working on a class project setting up a windows 2003 server(I think it is enterprise edition) and 5 client machines. We are the last group to go and I would like to see if we couldn't do something different than the other groups.

No one has used windows 98 because they couldn't get it to work with 2003 server using an active directory setup.

I would also like to setup some flavor of linux on a client. I have researched this a little bit and basically it sounds I need to setup samba to get this to work.

Anyone have any ideas that I could do. We are basically free to explore anything.
 
SUSE 9.1 has a pretty straightforward and relatively easy kerberos client for windows AD networks.

Windows98 clients can bounce the user login against AD so I don't know what problems your classmates were experiencing. It's 2006 however. 98 is pretty much useless and a dead OS. I wouldn't entertain any sort of project where 98 was concerned, IF you have the choice, which is sounds like you do. Can't do GPO's with 98. No Kerberos support. No IPSEC and so on but you can download some stuff to add non native support.

Just get AD client extensions if you decide to use 98 in the project.
 
Windows 98 sounds like a real pain and I may just forget about it.

Does anyone know any cool network programs like a chat room but something cooler. Freeware games would be cool too.

Create a domain with roaming profiles and file direction.
 
Setup the domain, and use a linux box to run MRTG/Nagios/etc to gather lots of data from the machines, such as CPU load, memory usage, Disk usage, etc. setup nagios to monitor all the services and page you within a few minutes of a box going down.

and cactai to monitor the routerrs or any SNMP source you want
