I went out today to look at an STi. Sadly, Ogden Subaru had none, but really wanted to sell me a WRX. Said they should be getting more in after the new year, or he could "find" me one if I was "very interested" before then, base model at MSRP. $31500 approx. Dealer told me flat out that nobody was going to let me test drive one.

Next stop, Ken Garff Mitsubishi of Riverdale. No EVO's in stock. very casual conversation led to a $32k price suggestion, and a "0-60 of 4.3...thats almost faster than a porsche GT, so its right up there with 180k cars" I almost called him a liar, but restrained myself.

I was pissed nobody had any cars I wanted to see.

Still at the Ken Garff Automall, I asked about the 350z's, sat in one, test drove one. An 03 performance with 5600 miles for "30k negotiable" Car was really comfortable, rear visibility was bad, would prefer to have some sort of a backseat. Instrument panel seems designed for really short people. looks stupid when you have the console "up" and still the speedo is partially obscured by the wheel. Didn't really get a feel for the performance, only got to 90 before the salesman kindly asked me to slow down, plus the roads were a little moist. I could drive this car. They had plenty of new Z's for sale too. love the look.

Rewind back to halloween, BMW of murray. Test drove an e36 M3 coupe...in the snow. This is the car i've wanted since my junior year of high school in 1995. I was actually kind of glad I could test drive it in the snow, as I now live in Utah, which is cold and mountainous. If the car was gonna be more of a pain than my truck to drive, I'd rather not buy it. Car did pretty good, only lost traction once, which was when I was trying to do so. Car sells for ~18k-22k in excellent condition with 50k or fewer miles.

so right now the M3 is on the top of my list. the only thing I don't like about them are that they're at least 5 years old now. I am trying to decide how much a "new" car is worth to me. Its slightly faster than the Z and "nicer" imo. The STi and evo are interesting. If I am going to spend $30k on a car, its stupid not to consider them. to me the STi is a 20k car with 10k in mods, and the evo is a $12k car with 18k in mods. The evo just looks cheap all around. I like the STi more, except for the wing. the plain wrx wing looks stupid too, so its pretty much an all or nothing choice... The z's definitely need to get cheaper to compete here.

If I get the m3, i can also get some other stuff I need...like a laptop, new hifi, couch, TV, etc.

anyways, thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Buy a new car with warranty. The M3 most likely won't break down but you don't want to be stuck with the repair cost if it does since it would be out of warranty.

M3 sure is a nicer car than any of those other cars.

But don't forget, everything comes with a price. Expensive to maintain, expensive to fix.

Wait for the Subaru man, you are in Utah.

The AWD is great for icy roads, and its a great performer.

...get over yourself.

I'd like to see you offroad with an STi. Hell, they race Imprezas on dirt roads.
Well, I own an impreza, and I've gone off road.
You were not there to see it though!
You ditched me!

It's definatly not an STi. I wouldn't be able to hande a car of that nature in thoes situations. Nor have I claimed I could.

I test drove an STi a couple of months ago. I don't know what your problem is. Maybe you should try calling in advance to schedule a test drive. That way they always have you what you want in stock. I've test-driven the Evo and the 350Z as well.

btw, the STi pwns *.*

It's because many dealerships are pricky about letting younger people drive their cars.
The dealership may feel the potential shopper is taking a less serious approach about buying, and more about joy riding.

I'm 25, my coworker, who bought 2 WRX's and is over 40 was stonewalled as well, on a separate occasion. The excuse from the dealer was that all the buyers want their cars with as few miles as possible...i.e. less than 10. bmw sends demo cars to its dealers for test drives of their hot new cars...subaru should do the same. They also said Jan 1 brings a new year and open slate on import restrictions and there should be a lot more of them...so I might wait until then.

Hmm... I'm 32 and the local dealerships let me test drive the Evo, the STi, and the 350Z (individual dealerships) no problems. All of them even invited me to do some "rockin'n'rollin'" if you get my meaning... ;)
Good fun. The Evo handles the best (gives new meaning to the expression "drives on rails"), the Z has the best exhaust sound and sports car feel, the STi is simply like driving the baddest thing on the road period, kind of like rocking in a built muscle car that handles too.

I said younger people. ;)

I think STi is definatly the best "cheap", for lack of a better word, new breed sportscar out there today.

Weird, I've never had my age be an issue when test driving cars. Never had someone refuse to let me drive one.

Mill?

And yeah, it's just a matter of attitude. I ask nicely first but I am test-driving the car or they can fsck the hell off. I don't take no for an answer easily. :)

Yeah, I shortened my nick, but some troll has already registered Millennium. Anyway, I agree that it is all about attitude. I tell them I am interesting in buying, and tell them what options on the car I want. I've never actually had to ask, because they always ask me if I want to test drive one. Wait, I take that back. I certainly wasn't asked if I wanted to test drive a Ferrari when I went to a Luxo dealer. The Audi dealership around here sometimes gives out Cayennes as loaner cars. I would like to test drive one of those or a 911.(It's a Porsche/Audi stealership)
