Claritin not working... ideas?

I'm sneezing like a sneeze machine, taken 2 claritin today and nothing is stopping it.
Who has fought spring pollen allergies with success and how?
 
Drill a hole into your sinus cavity and fill it with salt. This will stop the tickling of your nose which is causing the sneezing. This will work much better than going to a CVS and buying some other allergy medicine.
 
I know what you're going through. My eyes are burning so bad I can hardly keep them open for a few seconds at a time.

Nothing much I've been able to do but take a nap and hope it gets better.

I think Claritin only works for certain people. I've tried it and it never had any effect on me. Stupid me, I paid almost $30 for a large pack from Costco. I currently use Tylenol but it leaves me drowsy. However, it cures my allergies.
 
This is the first year of allergies for me. Never had an allergy to anything, and this year starting sicne last week, I want to scratch my eyes out, and I sneeze non-stop.
Went to Target today and decided to swing by the pharmacy and pick up smth. No luck, they were sold out on _everything_. On every single piece of anti-allergen medicine. Damn.
 
I'm well past 50, and have started to develop allergies for the first time in my life...sux huh? Claritin doesn't work for squat for me. None of the OTC meds do. I've tried several, and benadryl helps a bit, but makes me sleepy as hell, Sudafed helps with the congestion, but wires me up like a nose full of crank. No happy medium.
 
Go see an allergist and get a prescription. The medication that he/she can give you is infinitely better than anything OTC, with less side effects. Singulair, Flonase, Allegra, etc.

 
Next year, try having locally produced honey on toast a month or so before you usually get the allergies. I've used this method successfully for the last couple of years and my hayfever has been so much better

That works very well for two people I know. I have yet to try it. I'm not a big honey fan.

well, liking honey helps but it's such a cheap, easy remedy that it overcomes my aversion to it
 
As a severe seasonal allergy sufferer, let me say that Claritin is worthless crap and always has been. Go to your doctor and get a script for a corticosteroidal nasal spray, i.e. Flonase, Flixonase, or Naserel. They work so well it's like you don't have allergies at all. A life-saver for me.

For me, it's a miracle. Like I don't even get seasonal allergies at all, when usually I suffer horribly (i.e. puffy itching burning eyes, uncontrollable sneezing fits that would last for hours, sinus headaches, subsequent infections, etc.). I used to dread May and June.

Claritin is utter crap for me. I took 6x the dosage no effects whatsoever. BTW I slowly upped the dosage. One of the few things I KNOW works for me is Allegra-D

Bingo!

When I tell people to get a prescription, they usually say "you have allergies???" Before I started taking Flonase, I would be absolutely miserable. My allergies were so bad in the spring and fall, I'd end up missing a couple of days of work each year.

But like Vic said, it's now like I have no allergies at all. (Btw, when I took the allergy tests, I had a reaction in 40 of the 41 tests.)
 
there are unfotunately (or fortunately, depending on your views) a TON of allergy meds and thanks to the wonders of histamines, only 1 may work well for you, while the other 347,000 of them are pretty much worthless for you. its pretty much a trial & error unfortunately.
the only truely effective method is the RAST testing and finding exactly what you are allergic to and a custom serum made for you.
 
Actifed used to work great for me, but it's no longer available. Loratidine (Tavist) appears to work, but not nearly as well.
