Just curious. I never did know what they meant by this. What does it mean when someone refers to someone else as a "tool"?

TIA,

1. tool
One who lacks the mental capacity to know he is being used. A fool. A cretin. Characterized by low intelligence and/or self-steem.

A tool is someone who is being used without knowing it.

The term tool is more frequently used to define someone who is a jerk, an ass, a prick, etc. It is a term that can be used in polite company.

it means *generic insult*, pretty much the same as "asshole", "jackass", "dumbfvck", "asshat", etc.

None of these words have any real meaning other than, "I think you're an idiot".

I personally think about a real tool - like a hammer. The hammer does all the hard dirty work, and gets no respect or credit for the job (the carpenter gets the credit).

Or you can look at dictionaries. Too definitions seemed good explainations at dictionary.com:

[*]A person used to carry out the designs of another; a dupe
[*]A person who is controlled by others and is used to perform unpleasant or dishonest tasks for someone else.

Synonym: puppet.

However, it has been manipulated into slang to become a generic insult since the people saying 'tool' often have no idea what the word means.

It's a term of endearment for someone who is very helpful or makes your job easier (like a hammer makes driving a nail easier). I often express my gratitude as "Thanks for your help on that task, John. You're a real tool!"
