Clair de Lune - My GOD. What a masterpiece

It is a masterpiece because it breaths such life. Classical music is so rigid, so lifeless in many ways. I bow my hat to those french impressionists who gave a big middle finger to the stodgy bunk of the classical period.

That you can deny Clair de Lune to be a masterpiece is testament to exactly what I'm speaking about. Your definition of "masterpiece" has to do more with technical conformity than enjoyment of the music.

Well, you went ahead and confirmed it: You know nothing about the classical period or "classical" music in general.

Expose yourself a little more before you make ignorant judgements.

[edit]Sorry, didn't mean to sound so mean.[/edit]

I don't have any particular pieces in mind, but during my Music Appreciation class 10 years ago, I had a preference for the Baroque era over the classical.

I freaking hate ****** ass recordings of classical music... I want CLEAN, NO HISSING, STUDIO QUALITY SOUND DAMNIT!

Expose yourself to more "classical" music. Clair de Lune is a decent piece, but by FAR a masterpiece.

Or just try listening to it 20 times in a row, you'll hate it.

There are very few things I can listen to an innumerable amount of times and still like, but Erlkonig performed by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore is one of them. Try that over Claire de Lune.

Decca and Phillips have some of the consistently better quality recordings. You can get a lot of great albums from Amazon UK that you can't get around here as well.

That's a good lied. E minor, right?

OP, you badly need more exposure. To call Mozart's oevre dead and lifeless, actually, that means you need a shrink too. Get help.

I listen to a ggreat deal of jazz and an appreciable amount of classical music. I'll listen to anything moving.

Clair de lune is a great piece, masterpiece is subjective, unless your audience is classical musicians or critics.

G minor *e-penis.... FLEX*

Beware of cheap imitations, of recordings done by sopranos, tenors, and "stacatto" pianists.

Doh! Well, it's been a while. At least I remembered it was a minor key. 😀

How are you to say that Clair de Lune is *not* a masterpiece? I don't WANT to know anything about the classical period, if it is simply some encyclopedic understanding of what is considered good - which is precisely what you hang on to. Classical music was a product of elitism, so perhaps this is what drive you and the likes of you. The worst music snobs I've ever met were the "classical music" ones. Oh, that horn was slightly flat. Oh this was clearly not how Handel wanted it played. Shut the f*ck up, tools.

How can you be someone who appreciates music, yet can deride another's view of what is considered a masterpiece?

Deutsch Grammophone FTW

My god, yes. So beautiful. But the gymnopedies will be laughed off this board if I were to call them masterpieces.

So let the fvckers laugh. 😀 I have his complete solo piano works plus a few selected items.

I'm not going to laugh you off. Hell, I might admit that they are Satie's masterpieces... dunno if I'd consider them masterpieces in a more broad context. Actually, I do. I wouldn't. Claire de Lune is simply not a masterpiece. Debussy certainly didn't tout it as one, he wrote many other things.
