It is a masterpiece because it breaths such life. Classical music is so rigid, so lifeless in many ways. I bow my hat to those french impressionists who gave a big middle finger to the stodgy bunk of the classical period.

Expose yourself to more "classical" music. Clair de Lune is a decent piece, but by FAR a masterpiece.

Or just try listening to it 20 times in a row, you'll hate it.
There are very few things I can listen to an innumerable amount of times and still like, but Erlkonig performed by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore is one of them. Try that over Claire de Lune.

That's a good lied. E minor, right?
OP, you badly need more exposure. To call Mozart's oevre dead and lifeless, actually, that means you need a shrink too. Get help.

G minor *e-penis.... FLEX*
Beware of cheap imitations, of recordings done by sopranos, tenors, and "stacatto" pianists.
Well, you went ahead and confirmed it: You know nothing about the classical period or "classical" music in general.

Doh! Well, it's been a while. At least I remembered it was a minor key.

Decca and Phillips have some of the consistently better quality recordings. You can get a lot of great albums from Amazon UK that you can't get around here as well.
If you like French music, do you like Erik Satie?

My god, yes. So beautiful. But the gymnopedies will be laughed off this board if I were to call them masterpieces.

I don't have any particular pieces in mind, but during my Music Appreciation class 10 years ago, I had a preference for the Baroque era over the classical.
