I had to work on a client's machine:
Celeron 466 (maybe 400), 64MB, Some BX/ZX MB, CL TNT1 16MB AGP, Creative SB128 PCI, some ISA modem...
He initially had Win98 first edition installed, with the original drivers (Creative version, based on nVidia 1.13). The installation was beyond repair, so I formatted and installed Win98SE (perfectly legal here) and DirectX7. I then downloaded Creative's newer drivers (based on nVidia 5.22), installed them and they seemed to work. But, when going to DXDIAG, they comp would just freeze - just mouse, nothing would get it out but a reboot. Tried nVidia's reference 5.22 drivers - same thing. Then I tried nVidia reference 3.68 (had them around), and lo and behold - they work fine!
The machine is out of the shop... but can anyone offer an explanation?
