CL Ad: $30 for any version W7? Sound legit?

ATOT,

I was scouring my local CL looking for W7 Pro/Ultimate to put on the HTPC I'm building; I came across this ad (no link...not necessary):

"Windows 7 32/64 $30 Any version for desktops,Laptops, and Netbooks Comes with license and product key can be installed before you pay."

I emailed the seller:

If I read your ad correctly, you are selling a legit copy of Windows7
Ultimate 64-bit for $30? Are these original DVDs with the Microsoft
hologram on them? Is the key for a FULL or an UPGRADE version?

Personally, I think it's a scam. Copied DVDs with stolen keys, at best. About a year ago I bought a legit new copy of W7x64 Ultimate here at AT and paid $100 for it. This CL deal can't be right. Thoughts?

Oh sure it will install...then a week later you get a notice that your product isn't genuine, because that key has been used 150 times.

"NO" as in "This does not sound right?" I don't want any illegal, stolen software on my computer. I've seen people selling THEIR COPY of an OS before for cheap, just to get rid of it, but selling in bulk, cheap...doesn't sound right.

Scam. It's probably either an imported, student, MSDN, Technet or enterprise key -or- just a hacked copy.

It's definitely not a legal US OEM or retail key.

If the seller had won an extra copy from MS or something like that they'd only have one copy of one version, not an unlimited supply of "any version"

Sounds like someone trying to sell their student version, or someone just trying to make money by selling the key a bunch of times.

Ooooooh, that scam. The Dead Key Scam. I know that one. Any copy of W7 will INSTALL, it's just good luck with the activation. Let's see what or if, the seller replies. I'll post the reply here for shits and giggles. Thanks.

Why even bother trying to get Windows from Craigslist/EBay/insert secondhand source?

Because there are actually people out there legitimately selling stuff they legitimately own. I know better than to trust outright and had my doubts about this ad from the get-go. That's why I'm checking things out with you guys. I know there are student copies out there that you student types get for free, copies given out at conferences, etc. All have legit keys.

Sometimes the educational version is good enough.

Real version of AutoCAD is something crazy like $4,000. Student verison is more like $500. If I want to run a business where AutoCAD would be useful for drawings but I don't need to give the drawings to anyone else (I use them as blueprints then build it myself), then that's all I need. It's illegal to use it like that, but hey at least I'm not pirating it am i rite guyz?

The chance is miniscule but it is possible. Where I work I was provided a digital download of Windows 7 and Office 2kwhatever for $15 each. It's technically not for resale, but I don't know if the laws actually stand up on that.

Yep, I also know things like this happen and that's why I'm looking into this. Was at a conference (closed to public, invite only) a few years back and MS was giving out full versions of Server 2003 with 5 CALs to all attendees. Some people may have scored more than one copy...say maybe 6 copies...:sneaky: by schmoozing the bimbo at the table.

It happens.

It might be 'legit' in that he has a volume license from a school or business and it will install and activate, but that would break the license agreement.

yeah , def do it. makes total sense. after can i sell u a book on how to turn lead into gold if u are interested.
