I played Civ4 for the first time the other day..I started out and was like 'this is boring.'

Three hours later, I managed to pry myself away. :Q

This is worth $20 just to get the 3rd expansion AND have all of them on Steam. I moved and I have no idea how deep my game discs are buried, but I need to reinstall and can't.

Are the expansions worth $20 by themselves?
I already bought regular Civ4 in the D2D sale for $5.

And do they just integrate into the stock game, adding new features? new tech trees?

My thoughts exactly. I played 17 hours in two days last week before I could extricate myself from this game. Gotta save this game for days when I have nothing that needs done.

colonization is not an expansion pack; it is a separate game - completely different

most of warlords stuff is in BTS.

I thought that each of the expansions (other than colonization obviously) just built upon the others. What does warlords have that BTS doesn't?

Yep, everything else is there. Plenty of free player-made scenarios online.

This is the first time I heard of Steam and I have a question.

I just purchased the Civ IV Complete Edition for $19.99 from Steam. Will Steam send me the DVDs or I can only play Civ IV complete edition game by logging in to the new Steam account that they asked me to create when I purchase the item ?

Thanks in advance for your help and it's a great deal btw.

You need to log into your account through the Steam service program, get it here if you don't already have it. Once the Steam program is installed, you need to go to My Games tab and download the game. They will not send you DVD's.

That is the "love it or hate it" proposition of Steam. Some feel constrained and repressed by the system it's restrictions, others, like myself, enjoy the freedom of not needing to track, manage and use DVDs and product keys (especially with small children) and the Steam community is pretty powerful and makes it easy to setup games with friends and family and players you like.

I am on the fence with Civ 4 - I don't want to buy it just to spend money - it's a good deal, but I am not sure if I will really play it. It's probably going down in an hour or two.

edit:

I was right to the last click and I decided to abort. Too many other games I want - CODMW2, L4D2, Badlands, Dragon Age, etc.

Since Steam is blocked at work, can anyone tell me what all this offer includes? I assume Civ4 + the 2 expansions. Someone above mentioned Colonization, is that included as well?

Too bad there isn't a sale on just Colonization, as well.

I think I'm missing one expansion, I may have to hit this in the butt just to have them all.

In, too good of a deal to pass up. Arguably the best strategy game ever.

I hear all you need is Beyond the Sword as it includes Civ 4 and both expansions. But Colonization is separate. All the scenarios aren't in BTS though.

That isn't exactly correct. As a user who has a 4890 but has never played a FPS game on it because I can't pry myself away from Civ, let me clarify:

Civilization 4 is the original game.

Colonization is a stand-alone remake of the classic title using the same graphics engine.

Warlord is the first Civ4 expansion. It added some more civilizations, leaders, and units. It also introduced some minor game mechanic changes and some maps and scenarios. The content was approximately equivalent to a typical RtS expansion.

Beyond the Sword was the second expansion, and could be called Civ 4.5. It added many more new leaders and civilizations, expanded the tech tree, added lots of new units, introduced a new espionage system, expanded the space-race victory condition, and once again introduced new maps and scenarios. The gameplay is quite different in BtS - the AI is improved, the AI bonuses shrink, the combat system was partially changed...it's really a quite different game.

Beyond the Sword includes all of the content included in Warlords except the scenarios. I would not pay more than $1 for a Warlords disk if i had Beyond the Sword. Also, all of the competitive multiplayer action, and much of the casual MP action, is Beyond the Sword only.
