Okay, so we're doing the Civil War in History and my teacher wants us to write a rough-draft of an essay on the following question:
Explain how the attributes of the Union which helped to win the war contributed to the failure or mixed result of the Reconstruction. Include connection to resources, ideals and leadership.
I am only familiar with the things that were good that happened because of the war. Such as new factories and industrialism in both the North and South, woman taking career jobs, etc.

The only thing that was a failure after the war was that most freed slaves were forced to go back to work for their previous owners because they were without food and money in foreign land and that Lincoln only freed slaves in the states where he couldn't and did not free slaves where he could.

I need more ideas :(

Just ideas :) Figure someone here must be a history buff and can throw some good ideas my way.

Thanks again Anandtechers!

Lincolns assasination was huge delay for reconstruction of the south. When Johnson was elected, the senate kept denying everything he tried to pass.

I'm not sure if that answers your question or not.

Well the North was largely conscripted army, and thus it was laregly divided on the opinion of slaves and what to do with them once freed. Furthermore, once some freed slaves began moving up North, they were considered comeptition for jobs.

Abrahamn Lincoln was the South's greatest ally in the North (even though the South considered him the root of all evil). Shame he was assasinated, most definitely made Reconstruction even more bitter and difficult. Lincoln had no desire to punish the South, but that ideal went away with him.

I don't know much anything about Johnson, but Grant though probably having ideals closest to Lincoln, was no good as a politician and his administration was full of corruption.
