who here has taken the civil service exams? so what is it like? is like a series of exams where the more you pass, the easier it is to get a job, and more pay?

being a young U.S citizen, will getting some kind of government job really benifiet me? is taking the exam my best way to start?

also, when people say "government" job, everyone says it is great because of the benifits and all that....but exactly what kind of job are we talking about here? so for me, i'm a math major, can I get a government job?

Well, the government has LOTS of different kinds of jobs. If you're a Math major, I am sure the different economic bureau's might suit you somewhat, and possibly several research areas as well. For some/many of these jobs, you have to pass a merit based test. They are not hugely difficult, but selection is sometimes VERY limited, secutiry clearance is a pain, etc.

Civil Service exam is to enter the Civil Service, just like the Foreign Service exam is to enter the Foreign Service.

Take a looksy there. FYI the CS puts 99% of its people in Washington D.C. and the FS puts 99% abroad. The percentages are approximations, but seriously, think if you want to work in D.C. or a foreign country, or neither.

And think about what you want to do. Typically, a B.S. in Math is not the best preparation for most government jobs. G'luck.
