at what point will we finally separate church and state in the arena of marriage??

i'm a moderate christian, but i see no reason why the legal aspect of marriage should be soo entangled with religion.

the state should issue the civil licenses without moral implications. hence gays should be allowed to engage in legal civil marriages, whethor or not the church sanctions it should NOT be in the domain of the state.

what is difficult about this?? on what basis does ANYONE object to this?

why would conservatives want this?? i thought conservatives wanted morality OUT of government.

Homophobia, ignorance, intolerance, etc. To me it goes against what the average American would say America stands for - equality/freedom of expression, etc.

but it shouldn't be a gay/straight issue. it should be a separation of church and state issue.

Agreed, but different people have different reasons to be against it. There is a pervasive and underlying homophobia across the nation, so many people will use that as a motivation to find a different way to fight this instead of "they're just sick and gross". So people make various different arguments, none of which hold any water from what I can tell. It's just a matter of time until it's legal, and those fighting it are fighting a losing battle.

Personally, I think it'll happen pretty soon. It seems to be an issue that's gaining quite a bit of attention.

i would still like to hear a good legal argument why church and state shouldn't be separated on this issue like it is supposed to be in all other issues??

separation of church and state is a good thing, just look thru history, all of our greatest atrocities as humans have come about as an attempt to enforce morality thru political / military power.

There really isn't one. The Seperation is fundamental to a free country.
