I have a '96 civic coupe. Yesterday I hear rattling sounds coming from the tail-pipe. When I get the chance to stop I shake the pipe and I hear some clinking sounds coming from it. At low revs (when there is a bit of vibration) that is what causes the noise. Looks like I might need another exhaust pipe. This will be the third time in as many years that I have to change the exhaust. In addition, I had to change the entire exhaust pipe under-neath the car earlier this year. So what is the problem? Cheap parts? There is some special exhaust I need?

Darnnit I am a broke student

exhaust isn't among the cheap things on your car. my 91 civic had to have the entire system replaced from the manifold back for $700 i think, included muffler and cat.

I think it's a piece of metal that holds the exhaust pipe in place.
My family's CRV did this not too long ago for the 3rd time.

My father just used some Copper Wiring and set it back in place.

<--- mine is making sounds, not very loud but i can hear rattling. 🙁
ohh ya 94 civic hb

No exhaust system should need replaced in a year. Most likely one of the heat shields is loose. Of course, this is assuming a stock exhaust. If you've got one of those bloody coffee can monstrosities then I'm not really surprised that the cheap junk is failing and inexpertly installed.

I live in MI so all the salt on the roads in winter may also be a factor. isekii, thanks. Now I need to go found some copper wire.

I lived in Ohio, we salt our roads as much as you do in that state up North. Still took 5+ years for the cheapest Midas exhaust to start having problems on my old Accord. I repeat: If the exhaust is falling off after a year, something is being done wrong, and it's being done wrong in a Big Way.

I think that you should go have it checked out first. My 240SX had the same problem with rattling problems with the exhaust. Most noticibly when after a surge of RPM during changing gears. I took it to the mechanic and he simply tightened the bolts of one of the mounts that held the exhaust frame which did the trick.

Jack up the car on some jack stands and look underneath if any of the donuts have gone bad. I had the same problem and all I had to do was change the donut(holds exhaust in place by hangers).
