Civic making a ticking sound when turning corners

My 05 Civic makes this strange ticking sound when turning. Only if I make a hard left or right to turn a corner though, not on open road. Sounds like the regular ticking hot metal makes as it cools. Doesn't seem to be affecting performance but it is getting louder. Doesn't look like anything is stuck in there. I did have new break pads put in not too long ago so maybe something has come loose. Any ideas?

I'd recommend fixing it sooner than later, but the chances of it exploding in the next few miles are slim. :p

Not sure I'd want to try it myself on a car I rely on. Just not skilled enough. So this dude can do it in an hour with manual tools. Good to know. Should take no time at all with pneumatic tools. How much would a CV joint cost? Internet is failing me.

CV axles from Rock Auto for a 2005 Civic 1.7l range from $39.79 to $114.29 each.

+1 for the CV joint.

They're really not too bad to replace, either. I managed to do one on my ex's Accord, and if I was able to do it, you can probably train a monkey to. Took me more than an hour, though.

Yeah definitely CV, and imho just replace the CV axles entirely, when you factor in the work of rebooting old ones along with the fact that the old joints have a lot of wear and tear by this point, it makes little sense not to just replace them with new parts. It's not very expensive, not very difficult, and things will be back to normal afterwards.

I got a work friend who's does weekend wrenching. Maybe I'll see if he can do it. If not I'll call my boy and see what he wants. I'm pretty sure it's just the right one.

I know on the older Odyssey vans you'd lose some transmission fluid when pulling the CV axles (I was researching it for a friend who had some CV axle clicking going on), not sure on the Civics if the transaxle is the same way or not. I would assume so, so be prepared to top off the transmission or heck doing a transmission fluid change while your at it.

replace the whole axels. send old ones back for core discount. mucho easier.

This, and I have come across instances where it's actually cheaper to buy the whole axle with inner and outer CV than just one CV joint

I'll second the "replace the whole axle" sentiment.

Get under there and see which it is, the boot will be torn and grease will have been flung everywhere. When My driver's side went out it would only tick making left hand turns.

Find a reputable supplier, I recommend going with Raxles. I used them to replace my CV axle, and while they were a bit pricey, when you call (they don't do online orders), ask em if you need any special bits to remove the old axle, they gave me the torx-bit I needed to remove the axle from the wheel hub at no charge. And, they were kind enough to throw in a pair of latex gloves too, because it's a messy job. There is a core charge however, but they ship you a return label to mail back your old one.

It look me like 2 hours to do mine but I work pretty slow because I don't want to screw it up since I rely on this car for daily use as well.
