Do the expansion packs for Civ4 add any decent value/game play to the game. I am thinking of getting the $5 GOG download but its Civ4 only no Warlords or anything else. I know there is a $40 complete version with all the expansions but I don't game that much anylonger and womder if its worth the 35.00 extra dollars.

Civ4 with the Beyond the Sword expansion is all you need. The Warlords expansion only adds a few scenarios that aren't in BTS. Civ4 + BTS is well worth $40. It is an amazing (and time consuming!) game.

Aside from the custom campaigns which I never play, I believe the xpacks do make the AI better and give you more diplomacy options. They also add new features to the gameplay and interface (can't remember what it added off the top of my head but I remember thinking it was worth the price). If you can afford it, might as well.

Beyond the Sword is possibly the best expansion I've ever played to any game. It includes almost everything from Warlords (Warlords has some scenarios that are not included with BTS), so you don't really need to buy both. You can probably find it for less than $35 though, I feel like I probably paid $30 for it right when it came out.

Beyond the Sword is packed! It easily could have been a stand alone version. Warlord as said is passable as you really only end up getting scenarios that BtS doesn't have.
