City of God

welcome to 2002!
but seriously, amazing. on my top ten of all time. I heard that all but one of the actors were amatuers plucked from the streets of Rio. Can anyone confirm this?

I loved it also. I only watched it because I heard film critics compare other movies to it that didn't measure up. One of the movies where I agreed with the critics.

I loved this movie. I am still not sure whether I think the protagonist was ultimately a "good" person or was ultimately a bit slimy. Sometimes I think he represents the same sort of person that we saw in Capote, the kind that is willing to use terrible events for personal gain. Other times I think there was nothing he could do and to choose sides would be a moral compromise.

Fernando Meirelles is a genius. 2 great movies in a row by him. Apparently he has a documentary series on the favelas of rio as well.

The one with ron perlman and the brain was City of Lost Children which I hated, hated, hated. It was directed by the guy who directed amelia and a very long engagement though, both of which I really liked.

it's basically about a kid growing up in Brazil. but... a lot more.

i loved it. i had to convince my wife to rent it because it was foreign and she had never heard of it. she ended up loving it though.

Well, I felt it was about the evolution of drug and gang violence in rio over the past few decades. As seem from the perspective of a kid growing up there. For those who care about such things, it is quite violent and even occasionally gory.

That's "City of Lost Children"...this movie deals with the rampant violence in Rio de Janeiro along with the gangs that run the city, gangs that are mostly comprised of teenagers.

It's a great story and in some ways a better film: if you watch the commentaries and read about what happened during the movie, you get a better sense of what it took to produce CoG.
