I receive this error message "The logon user interface Dll ctxgina.dll failed to load. " with a Restart button on the message when I load up our Windows 2000 Server.

I have tried booting it up in Safe Mode as well as Last Known Good Config, and both return the same message.

Solutions on Citrix's website are:

Resolutions

WARNING! Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Citrix cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Connect to a computer in the same domain as the MetaFrame server, run regedt32, and connect to a remote server (the MetaFrame server). Change the ctxginadll key in the registry to ginadll = msgina.dll or add/correct entries that are missing or incorrect. Reboot the server. The value is located undet HKEY Local Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\Winlogon

OR

Under Windows 2000, boot to safe mode and replace Ctxgina.dll from the latest service pack, CD, or working server in the system32 directory.

OR

Connect to the admin$ share on the MetaFrame server from a remote computer and copy a known good Ctxgina.dll file to the system32 directory.

NOTE: For issues with the Novell client, see the knowledgebase article Installing the Novell Client on a MetaFrame XP Server for the proper winlogon gina settings.

I had to load up ERD Commander 2003 to access the C: Partition. I copy Ctxgina.ddl from another working server. Same issue.

I tried doing the first resolution and the screen would stay blue and no Login screen comes up. I am trying this again at the moment.

Does anyone in Anandtech know how to resolve this issue? I do not know how this happened. My colleague did something to it.

Find a valid MSGINA.DLL from another server running the exact same OS and servicepack and hotfixes. Copy that into the System32 directory to overwrite both the existing MSGINA.DLL and the ctxgina.dll (in other words, both of those two files should actually be a good, valid MSGINA.DLL file.)

If you don't have another server running the same OS/SP/hotfixes, copy the 'bad' server's MSGINA.DLL over ctxgina.dll.

Make backup copies prior to overwriting anything.

Try to reboot.

Let us know.

I can get an MSGINA.DLL but i have no idea what the service pack on this broken system is.

I am trying to replace it and check if that works.

I didnt understand what you meant by

If you don't have another server running the same OS/SP/hotfixes, copy the 'bad' server's MSGINA.DLL over ctxgina.dll.

I did change the registry setting to point ginadll = msgina.dll

Now I get the message that "The Logon User Interface DLL Msgina.dll failed to load. Contact your system administrator to replace DLL or restore the original DLL."

There are a number of available fixes for this, one of which is getting MS04-003 security update. Link Now I have this update file on the C: of the broken server, but cannot execute it as I cannot get DOS Prompt or ANYTHING, and ERD Commander does not let me execute this file.

As I said before, I cannot get a Last Known Good Configuration.

The other solution requires a Hotfix which is available through Microsoft Phone support and is not on their website.

This is getting ridiculous.

Any help?

First thing I'd try is copying a known-good MSGINA.DLL from another server (at this point, even if you aren't dead-certain on the service pack / etc., try it.) via R.C. and then reboot and give it a shot in safe mode.

Bear in mind that the MSGINA.DLL copying you did - you needed to also copy to dllcache too.... you might re-try, while also copying the file to dllcache....

I have seen those above Microsoft links and tried the solutions in them. They STILL dont work. Specially since Last Known Good Config does NOT work.

I didnt replace MSGINA.dll in the dll cache, but i am doing so now
lets hope that makes a difference.

any other suggestions?

You can call them. However, since you can't boot the OS, the hotfix really won't help. Something else is probably wrong. Did you go thru all the KB/Q articles and check out the HWORDER and such keys? What servicepack is this running? C:\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386 should have a SPx.CAB file that will tell you what svcpack it (should) have on it.

One thing to try is using the winnt\repair version of the registry, backing up your current registry first prior to making any changes. You can see details in my .sig's URL. That would tell you if this is a file issue or a registry issue.

Typically the steps you've taken will fix this issue, so I'm a bit surprised it's still going on.

I dont see any HwOrder in the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider

I only see Order and ShortName meaning the following are the registry entries:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\ShortName

The machine has SP4 installed and the server from which I took ctxgina.dll and msgina.dll also has SP4 installed. So copying them over didnt help. I'll answer your next post as well.
