I'm doing a project for an MIS class on Citrix, pretty much what it is and what it does. Just wondering if anyone has used Citrix (MetaFrame, or any product) and has any comments/suggestions/interesting notes. And YES, I am doing my own research, and I'm not asking anyone to tell me all about it. Just wanted to see if anyone had anything interesting to say. If not interesting, then, well, something uninteresting....

We use Citrix a decent amount at the company I work for, and it does a lot of great things. But in the end it's still a hack ontop of Windows to make it support multiple concurrent users when Windows wasn't designed for it. A lot of things work fine, but a lot more don't because most Windows apps are written poorly and don't take into account multiple users, even non-concurrent ones. Like CuteFTP for example, good FTP client that even properly supports out VAX/VMS boxes but it saves all it's info in a ini file in the executable directory, when it should use HKCU in the registry or an ini file in the user's profile directory, which makes it not work well with Citrix.

Also printing is a PITA, it's possible (and happens fairly regularly here) for a user to print something and have the printer drive BSOD the box.

Amen, brother! :)

It still provides a very cost effective way for clients to share applications. Most major applications (Office, financial software, email clients....) install with no problems and have no difficulty supporting multiple users. It also provides companies ways to incorporate older, slower machines by relying on the TSE/Citrix server to do all the processing. I would certainly recommend a fast LAN connection for users, especially if they are running multiple apps. All in all (license costs aside), I think it leverages TSE pretty well.

It's used a lot by ASP's. We use it internally, and we also use an ASP that hosts an application on a Citrix environment.

BTW, you might also want to read a little about MS Terminal Server.
