CitiesXL 2012

Unless I can't search, which is quite possible, I can't find a thread for this here.

So, with that, Judging by the lack of a thread here, either there isn't much interest, or no one knows that it comes out in a week or so. I fall in the latter category.

I have played CitiesXL 2011 and, to be honest, I do actually like it. I think it's got some innovative features that improve on the genre and since EA/Maxis can't release a true successor to SimCity 4, this is the only alternative.

With that being said, anyone else interested in this title? I just pre-ordered it as it's on major sale since I already own 2011 on Steam ($13.49). It also appears it more of an continual expansion pack than a stand-alone title anyway even though it is completely stand-alone.

hmm didn't know they were putting this out on a yearly basis. I don't really like the pre-made building setup as opposed to grow able structures like SimCity.

Wonder what the changes between '11 and '12 are? '11 was pretty much a clone of the previous version.

Here's a preview:

Looks wicked, has snow, not sure what feature changes there are. The MMO version had 'GEMs' that weren't fully implemented where you could have sort of mini games with a ski resort or beach town, wonder if they got those changes into the game?

Biggest feature I see seems to be that you can now mod the game. That could be incredible if modders pick it up.

I have one eye on this one, but I'll need some reviews and impressions before I dare spend the money on it. Nothing has equaled Simcity for me in terms of overall fun; I tried the original Cities XL and got bored and a little frustrated with it, so I'm apprehensive.

Yeah, I didn't know either. I think full price ($40) is too much to ask on a yearly basis, but if they're actually going to put work in it and improve the game, then I'm happy. I'm glad that there's a city-builder being actively worked on, to be honest.

I agree with both the above points. The other thing I'd like to add is it's pretty system demanding. I've upgraded since running 2011 so we'll see how much better it performs with lots more ram and more cores.

I'm only ordering it because at 13.49 its a no brainer to be honest and it wouldn't be that low again unless during a sale.

Cities XL 2012 is an expansion, $15, for owners of XL 2011. If you don't own XL 2011, you can just buy 2012, $40. Either way, XL 2012 = XL 2011 + expansion.

The downside of this game is that it's optimized for single core only. And it's not something that's going to be changing. So upgrading your cores has no difference. As to ram, again no difference unless you were running your system with 2GB of ram.

I'll be getting the expansion at some point as I enjoyed XL 2011.

i've got my eye on this one, can't find a single review though..... can someone please post their thoughts after they have it?

thanks

If you've played cities xl 2011, then you've played cxl 2012; It's just DLC, not even proper expansion. Few extra buildings and a few extra maps, something that a modder could have done in a few days for free.

Same bugs, same shitty coding, same game. If you like playing video games at 10 FPS, then by all means...

Focus home are just tacking on new stuff, the core game that sucked balls back in 2010 still sucks now, nothing they have done has fixed that and i doubt they can fix it because there isnt much money to be made from that franchise now.

No deep simulation, no multicore support, no real alternative to simcity.

Im sure its still a POS, i had 2010 and it was garbage, complete buggy crap. Ran like crap on my system which can max out pretty much all modern games. They would have to pay me to get this game.

I waited and did not buy either original nor 2011. Got 2012 and can say the following:

Its a interesting take, and as long as I don't think about how good SC4 with all the mods is: then I like it for what it is. It "does" get fairly slow - but not unbearably so. I really like all the options you have available, esp specifying the kinds of zone granularity. However I don't like the roadbuilding, it seems chunky at best, its hard to actually build a usable road network that isn't interweaved with a ton of stuff. I also don't like how everything can be a different size, so its really hard to lay out symmetrical efficient cities.

They have to make road upgrades easier. The game makes it difficult at best to build with plans of later road expansion and the current upgrade method of bulldoze, build, and hope all the junctions pair up is just bad. If they would fix this, it would be a big win in my book.

Also, I was playing 2011 on an island-chain type map and tried to connect two islands in my area by ferry, but the game treated this small island like another city that needed it's own town hall. Had to struggle with building a bridge instead and that's not an easy process in its own right.
