couldnt access citibank. went to a 'is it down' website. said it was down.

then i saw this article saying it's been down for 24hrs!
http://www.streetinsider.com/Inside...itibank.com+Down+Nearly+24+Hours/7972193.html

glad billpays are setup to mid-jan already and have the funds xfers to my checking acct also setup already.

this would really suck to the procrasinators that wait to the last minute to pay bills.

someone in Citi's IT dept is going to get canned...

Yet another reason why I don't touch Citi. I keep hearing about how much they suck, I can't figure out why anyone even uses them.

I never understood how a professional company website can go down like that. I can't say any of my personal websites have ever gone down near that long. Heck, when I ran my Ultima Online server it had better uptime than the official EA servers. I even pushed a huge update that changed core systems and the downtime was under 5 minutes, basically the time it takes to save, recompile, and reload the server.

No excuse for any website or service to go down in this day and age. Especially something that is not just a hobby.

The only time any of my sites have gone down for long was during the SOPA protest.

I'm glad it's just not me. I was paying bills today and was not able to schedule the payment.

I sent them a large cashiers check to pay off my full balance 10 days ago which has still not credited. Pretty tired of the bs.

Glad my bank is 50 yards from my office.

It seems they are down often when I am ready to pay them. I like to go through my bills each paycheck and be done with them.

You really can't compare a personal website with low traffic with a website from a major bank.

Agreed. Pretty much like saying the 4 cylinder Honda engine in my car ran for 200k, but that Ferrari F1 race car blew an engine after 2 laps. Apparently, Ferrari F1 doesn't have their shit together.

While I understand what you guys are saying, I don't think that the analogy is valid. True, the corporate servers will have to deal with MUCH heavier traffic than a personal website, not to mention attacks...but they are also doing a much more important job, and have a much higher budget with which to do it.

It's more like comparison a 4-cylinder Honda to a semi truck. The semi has to pull much more weight, but it's built to handle it, and should be MORE reliable than the Honda. Similarly, corporate servers should be robust enough and redundant enough to handle unexpected equipment failures or spikes in traffic. Perhaps their IT department is underfunded.

got in. had to reset the password that i've been using for the past year.
WTF?!

Bet they got hacked...watch your accounts carefully for the next few months.

If it's a DDoS attack, it really doesn't matter what their budget is. Even a top tier CDN can be overwhelmed in that situation.

I have two CCs through Citi and I tried paying my bills a few moments ago, and it took 15 minutes to actually get all the way through to the submit payment page, for one account. Still have the other to pay, luckily it's not due until the 9th but still I like to do all my bills at once so they are out of the way.

I've been using their mobile app to log in and it's been fine. I don't think I've used their main website in months.

That's my point, a personal website/service is not really all that important, yet I kept mine running even during some complex changes.

A bank should have way more infrastructure and staff and they really have no excuse for their site to go down that long. Any company worth a dime will have either their own NOC or a contracted NOC and the minute something goes wrong they get a notification and can fix it within a short period of time. Redundancy on top of redundancy... it should not go down to begin with, but if it does it should be quick to get it back up.

Now DDoS attack is a little bit more tricky, but even then there are ways (very expensive) to mitigate them.

It isn't their fault. They have been under constant DDOS attack by Izz ad-Din al-Qassam.
