Citibank Account Flagged!

Out of nowhere my ATM/Debit Citibank account was flagged and placed on hold.
Hasen't Citibank been having some security issues lately? I read a story of a guy that traveled to Canada and had problems when he needed money.

Today in the morning i tried to buy an Airline tix and was denied.

Finally spoke to Citibank just now and they just asked me to verify some purchases.. it went like this.

Citibank: Pathmark charge for $5.45
Me: Yeah bought some Cereal
Citibank: Hess station charge for $3.35
Me: yeah bought some milk
Citibank: AAMCO charge for $127
Me: Yep had to fix my car..
Citibank: BJ's gas charge for 1 dollar
Me: yep got gas after fixing car, thats a preauthorized charge.
Citibank: oh ok sir we just wanted to verify the charges.

So annoying.

Had it been a while since you've used the card? If not, the fact that you used it at that many stores in a day can cause a red flag. Think about it, if someone stole your card, they're going to rack up as much debt as possible before the account is closed. At least they're looking out for you.
 
Some computer algorithm spit out something unusual about your purchases. It might look stupid, but some day it might save your ass.
 
I got flagged a while back, but it didn't stop my card from working. I found out it was flagged when I logged in to the site, which I do about 3-4 times a week. No big deal. I'm glad they pay attention.
 
And if they had been actual fraudulent charges, you would've been pissed had they not called you and confirmed the purchases. :roll:

Exactly. To the OP, it's a minor inconvience that comes with the territory, and IMO, well-needed.

Four places? That's not really that many - if you don't carry cash and get a coffee/donut/whatever on the way to work..lunch, then gas & the supermarket on the way home..that's four. 🙂

they were doing their job.
i also have a citibank cc and once they phoned me to ask about charges. i had placed 5 orders for $1 each on the net.

 
Lots of little purchases, especially at gas stations where there usually isn't a human being checking the cards, throw up red flags. CC thieves often try to buy little things at gas stations and self-service checkouts to see if the card has been cancelled yet.

I do it all the time. 1 dollar here, 3 there. I probably have at least 20 charges a week.

I do have to say, yes i feel safe they are looking out for me, but like the article posted before Citibank did get hacked, so i'm guessing they are on high alert.

I still went on the entire day without knowing that my account was blocked. I should have called them when what i tried to buy in the morning was denied.
