Cisco Web Interface and Java Question

I have a Cisco 827H ADSL router. I have had to download Microsoft VM and install it on a machine to be able to use the web interface. If you use any other version of Java, the browser will not communicate with the router. I KNOW that I can telnet/putty into the router and use the command line interface, but it is so much easier to just use the web interface. I would like to do this from my linux machine as well, but don't know if there is a version of Java that is the same as the Microsoft VM.

I think I have Microsoft VM install somewhere, PM/email me and I'll mail it to you. (found it on a site last week, knew that I would want to archive it)

Microsoft may be "easier" than Linux, but you already know how much cooler linux is, or you wouldn't be trying to use it ;)

Why not learn the IOS instead of the GUI ?

Maybe because the PPPoE setup is totally mysterious and described in at least 3 different ways in the documentation supplied with the unit? I'm completely comfortable reading documentation for all manners of *nix services and programs, but I couldn't make heads or tails of PPPoE on my 837. I'm sure that if you know IOS already it's doable, but I'll be the first to admit that I was completely lost.

@geekender: I remember the Java issue, but I don't remember what I did. I think I may have just given up and went with the Microsoft VM, used the wizard to get started, and then modified things in IOS from there. If you'd like a copy of my config for the sake of comparison, PM me and I'll send one your way. I had some Cisco-heads check it out and they say it's solid.

search cisco's site. There are very specific java and browser configurations.

this is what happens when you try to webify IOS. It just ain't right.
