Ok, me and a co-worker are arguing about the maximum distance you can uplink 2 Catalyst 3548XL Enterprise Layer 3 switches together. He claims it is 16 feet, but I think it is farther than that. What's your judgement?

Depends, what are you using?

Copper you are limited to 100 meters officially, since its switch to switch you can hit 200 meters. (100bt)
With Gigastack modules I belive the limit is 16 feet, It may even be less as these are diesigned to place the switches directly in the same room. This uses Copper in a firewire style cable.

With Fiber however you can do practicaly unlimited distances, depending on the GBIC. SX, LX, and ZX modules all have different lengths. Anywhere from 500 meters, 2000 meters, or I think 20000 meters.

agree with previous two posts. If you really want to settle this with your buddy then call the cisco Technical Assistance Center (get number off web page)

but make sure you put some money down before you call. Make a little wager with your friend and go home happy. :)

I thought it was longer than 16 feet, since we were going to uplink them via gbic. Thanks guys.
