Cisco or Sniffer

anyone know if there is a way i can use the cisco switch or the Sniffer to get serial numbers of a workstation?

also is there a command in cisco where i can say any that list me the workstations or printers with mac addresses with the port numbers?

the only way i have found so far is to use the cam command with the mac address to look up the port number matching to that mac address.

anyone out there have an answer.

thanx.

Raju,

Don't remeber exactly, but I think you do show cam dynamic and it will list all of the MAC addresses. At least that used to work on the 5000/5500 catalysts. Since the 2924XL uses IOS and those other catalysts I mentioned use the old Catalyst version, I'm not sure if that command was ported.

To get the Serial Number of a workstation, you will need a DMI or WMI enable system managemtn application that will read the serial number of the workstation. A switch cannot do this.

As far as showing the port mappings to the MAC addresses, just view the MAC address table. This is a link to Cisco for the correct statments. Basically, you would issue a SHOW command, followed by mac-address-table detail . That's it.

You can use Microsoft's SMS 2.0 server. You can then visit Swyank.com for scripts on getting the serial number off of the machine.

But, if you have other OSes besides Microsoft's, let me know. I know of a site you can get additional clients that will support Unix/LINUS systems.

ok guys i tried the show cam dynamic at it shows me all macs but looks like it's broadcasting my other routers and getting me macs from there also, and the ports shows as 1/2 (all). anyway i can just hit that specific router without hitting any of my other routers, thanx.

No, because the switch will store all of the MAC addresses that exist on each port. SO if there are multiple MAC addresses on one port, you will see all of them. There is no way that the switch can distinguish which one is which. You will have to see which nodes are on the ports with multiple MAC addresses. Sorry.
