Cisco or Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 modem?

I just got off the phone with my cable/internet provider (RCN) and they told me that the DOCSIS 3.0 60/6 internet package is now available in my area...I'm in a 1 year contract package with pretty much everything included and the upgrade to 60/6 from my current 10 Mbps package would be an additional $50

the rep told me that the modem being provided by RCN is the Cisco DPC3000...anyone have any opinions on this modem?...is it a router/modem combo?...I currently have the Motorola SB5101 which I bought myself along with a D-Link DIR-655 router

would I be better off buying a Motorola SB6120 (DOCSIS 3.0) or using the Cisco DPC3000?...also if I got the Cisco modem would I still be able to use my D-Link router with it?...any help would be appreciated

The Cisco modem looks like a dumb modem, and I'm assuming that RCN is giving it to you for free, so I don't see any reason to use anything else.

RCN provides the Cisco modem but it's not free...there's a monthly modem rental charge on top of the $50 a month fee...if I use my own modem then they waive this charge...that's why I wanted to buy the Motorola SB6120...so the Cisco DPC3000 sucks?

either can work in pass-thru mode for multiple ip/static ip operation. there is a smc gateway that is popular too but it can be dumbed down real easy to modem level.

Dumb modem doesnt mean it sucks. It just means it isnt doing much in the way of routing or other additional features. Its basically a bridge to your ISP and thats it. I am not familiar with the device myself, but I just wanted to clear up that dumb doesnt mean bad

so it's just a cable modem?...that's actually perfect then because I love my D-Link DIR-655 router and want to continue using it...is the Motorola SB6120 a better choice though?
