Cisco IOS

This may belong in another fourm, but it's more for networking than anything if it needs to be moved please do so.

Now on to my question, is there any way to get cisco ISO to run on a PC? I have an older PC, and really don't want to spend $2500 so I can do homework not at school. Has anyone attempted this, is it legal? I would also be intersted in, if it is possible to run the ISO from the PC, can you do so with VMware, this way I could do everything from 1 PC rather than running another connection to the 'router'.

If it's not possible, legal or otherwise possible is there an open source program (linux-ish), since cisco's ISO is basically a special purpose linux OS, that this would do what I'm wanting.. with similar setup/running configs and commands.

IOS = Internetworking Operating System
ISO = International Standard Organization

see dynamips. keep in mind, you still need access to the actual IOS images, usually from an existing SMARTNet contract or license.

also, how old is your old PC? you need a somewhat decent box depending on how many routers you emulate. it would be best to use the rig in your signature 🙂

Dynamips, dynagen, etc forum

alternatively, you can look into a simulator like Boson's NetSim

stupid typo 🙁 Cool thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for. I was looking over the site and it seems that there are only a few supported versions of the IOS platforms, do you know off hand if other version might work(2600/2800 particularly) Not sure if my school has any 36x0 routers or licenses for one. And I know 72x0 is out of the question.

As far as the PC's go, I have a 3600+ AMD w/ 2gb RAM which is the ideal system for this in my opnion.. it's old and slow and doesn't do anything. Otherwise it's my 6000+ or the one in the sig, which ever works best and can be used with as little latency as possible.

Have you used Boson's by chnace? It looks decent, but I'm afraid it's basically what cisco has for their online books you can only do certin things and can't experement(or capture configs). Thanks again for the information 🙂

2600s are supported, x800 ISRs are not.

ive played around with it, not a big fan.

I haven't used the Boson stuff myself, but I have used Packet Tracer extensively (Cisco's simulator meant to study for CCNA). It can't do a few things like interface ranges, SSH, SDM, boot from tftp, etc., but it can do quite a bit of the routing/switching/wireless requirements for school type work.
