Cisco Catalyst WS-C2924M-XL-EN

I have bought one of these from ebay so it has no support from Cisco and could do with some help.

The IOS version is:

IOS (tm) C2900XL Software (C2900XL-H2S-M), Version 11.2(8.2)SA6

It has 8 Meg Dram, and the flash shows: Total bytes: 3612672, Bytes used: 1830912, Bytes available: 1781760.

Show version says the processor is running enterprise edition software, I take that to mean that the IOS image is the enterprise edition. As far as I can see from the searching the web this switch will take the later version 12 IOS

The questions I have are:

- What are the differences between IOS 12 and the version I have at present?

- Can you configure port mirroring on this switch with the installed IOS using the CLI commands?

- What is the difference between the standard edition software and the enterprise edition software?

- Can this switch with the installed IOS do switching at layer 3 as well as layer 2.

- Would this switch be better to learn about Catalyst switches than a normal 12 port C2900 XL.

- How different in configuring are the later Catalyst switches like the 2950, 3500, and 3750 switches.

Thw switch was cheap (£31.00) so if its of no use its not the end of the world. It passes all the POST without error, and I have connected to it and reset the passwords. The biggest "problem" with it is the noise from the fans, but its no worse than the other catalyst switches I have had to work with.

v12 would be better, lots more features.
no you can't do layer3
yes you can port mirror
enterprise can have more vlans
configuration on all IOS switches is exactly the same, however your switch uses vlan database which is rather old and dated.

that switch is very old, but most of the basics are still the same.

I have emailed Cisco explaing what I will be using the switch for training, gave them my cisco login details. Some how I can now download the CNA software and the IOS version 12 for the switch. I think the version I have dowloaded is the standard version.

What would I loose/gain in going from 11.6 enterprise to 12 standard?

How easy would it be to save the existing 11.6 IOS, load the new version, and then re-load the 11.6 IOS?

I have serial port access working and have reset the passords.

tftp the IOS file from the current file system, and then tftp the new on. You can tftp whatever version you want to prior to reloading the switch, but you will also need to tftp configs, as I don't think 11.x enterprise and 12.x standard configs will be 100% compatible.

From some more searching the net it looks like the IOS image downloaded from the Cisco website may be the enterprise version. The file name of image is: c2900xl-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC17.bin

I'll get a tftp server installed, and take an archive of the old software. If I make sure its safe I probably won't need it. If I loose it I will need it.

No need to resurrect a post this old, haha. But you should contact Cisco to get a new version.
