Cisco AS5400

Has anyone used one of these? What were your thoughts/experiences with them?

We are looking at getting one to be our media gateway for our IP telephony services. Currently, we have our T1 PRIs terminating to an Asterisk box and we're starting to notice little issues that may or may not be related to the fact that software timing and DSPs suck. So, we're looking at replacing that portion of the network with a hopefully better solution. I wanted, though, to get an idea of what we might be looking at as far as these go.

Our other option is a Lucent MAX TNT, however, the ones that we have are not licensed for SIP (despite being licensed for VoIP) and Asterisk's h323 support is virtually nonexistent.

Any thoughts or whatever about the AS5400 would be helpful! Or hash codes for the MAX TNT...those would be fun, too 🙂

I have used an AS5400 as a voice gateway for a Cisco Call Manager server. We had no problems putting 2 DS3 PRI circuits into it. We tied it to the Call Manager using Sip trunks as well as H323. When connecting the Sip trunk to another system we have had some trouble, mostly because the other system is requiring a response type that is not supported by default on Cisco IOS. A little bit of work and debugging has always lead us to a solution on this though. Once that kink is worked out, I have had very little trouble using an AS5400, or most any of the Cisco ISRs as a voice gateway.
