CISCO 871W - no warranty left - need help

I have a CISCO 871W.

Router stopped working.
Router is not assigning an IP, and it gives me a self assign IP everytime I connect the computer, which even if I try assigning a static IP on the computer it won't let me connect to the router to access the SDM config.

However if I connect an DHCP ROUTER through the WAN, and connect the computer through port 1 it works as an extension of the DHCP router or basically as a switch.

I tried resetting following Cisco's FAQ.

Is there a way to CLEAR MEMORY or something else I might be doing wrong in order to regain the router or is it a piece of crap and should be thrown to the garbage?

You can try consoling in and debugging that way. I'd attempt to offer help, but Cisco's IOS is not something you can learn overnight. There are people who study that their whole lives and make their living from their knowledge of Cisco IOS. I know it well enough for what I do at my job, but I'm sure that what I know barely scratches the surface of the full capabilities.

You can try this though: Once consoled in and in privileged mode (a.k.a. "enable" mode), you can issue a "write erase" command followed by a "reload" command. Answer "no" to whether or not you want to save your setting. This will restore your router to factory defaults (i.e. no config) and when it starts back up, it will ask to run you through the initial configuration wizard. You might consider doing that.

I can't gain access. MAybe I'm doing something wrong.

Could you provide me the best way to get through console:

I have the console PORT to a serial, then a Serial to USB cable.

How do I access through Windows XP or Mac OSX?

Make sure you are using the correct console cable. Also the USB/serial adapters are flaky at best. But to really see what is going on you'll need to get console access to it. I'm sure you can get a console cable for cheap, they are throw away things.

Also for that model there may be a way to totally clear it without a console cable - check the manual or search your model on cisco.com.

The reset button only allows the default config to load, but if the default is not configured well then it doesn't work.
Strange, $600 router where the RESET button doesn't factory reset.

🙂

That's what the console is for, you have complete control over the router. The console cable came with your router.

I have the cable. But macbook pro don't have serial, so I've bought the serial to USB cable.
I have a dell 8600 with the dock - but the dock has some problem which gives the serial problems.

cfg file corrupted.
How do I restore the CFG using Console?
Where can I download the new ISO since CISCO won't let me download from them? How do I become a partner or somethign like that?

I'm in the console, but searching Google is not coming up the answers I need to restore the cfg file and more importantly being able to download the latest ISO from cisco.
