I'll state right up front that my network skills are slim to none, so bare with me.

Has anyone been able to succesfully configure a Cisco 675 DSL modem on Win XP Pro?

I bought a used Cisco 675, but can't seem to communicate with it through the management port. The seller sent me an rj45/serial adapter to use with a cat5 cable instead of the original management cable that comes with the modem. He said that is what he used, and I guess it seems to make sense. But, I have not been able to connect to the modem via hyperterminal using this cable/adapter combo, and right now, it's the only method I have.
So, I don't know if I am trying to connect incorrectly or what?
If anyone has used a rj45/serial adapter to connect to the PC's com port, what kind of cat 5 cable was needed to connect the adapter to the modem's mgmt. port? Is it a crossover cable, or standard ethernet cable?

I've never used the com ports to communicate with an external device via Hyperterminal, so I guess after following the Cisco instructions, and not seeing the CBOS info in Hyperterminal after trying to connect to the modem, I am thoroughly confused.

I'm running Win XP Pro on a SOYO Dragon + board (2 com ports). The COM ports don't appear to have any errors or conflicts when viewed through Device Manager.
Anyone have a step by step document for dummies I could look at for making the 675 work on Win XP.

Assuming the cable/connection isn't the problem, I have the modem connected to the COM port, and then start hyperterminal. I make a connection using the parameters Cisco recommends. According to the instructions, I should see info from the modem's CBOS at this point. I see nothing. just a blank hyperterminal. It shows I am connected, but nothing appears. It actually seems to hang hyperterminal. I have to wait to disconnect. I can't just go up and click disconnect, because the system is busy. It frees up for 2 seconds, then is busy again for 4 seconds (strange?).

Anyway, I am at a loss for even how to troubleshoot this thing. Without seeing data come back from the Modem in Hyperterminal, I don't know what is going on with the modem.

Thanks in advance for any advice you have,
