Even though they are switches I thought that because it is an IOS device they could be programmed to be a router(NAT ROUTER) if need be.

Am I wrong?

Catalyst 2960S and 2960X models can be configured to do static layer 3 routing with a maximum of 16 SVIs (they don't support L3 ports at all) by changing the SDM template.

Switches have evolved from the standard definition of frame switching box to doing advanced layer 3 functions such as routing and NAT. Yes, there still are switches that only do swithing. But I'm seeing more and more layer 3 functions propagate into the LAN.

No 2960 will do NAT, not even the ones that support layer 3 by default (2960XR).
