Hi all,

Sorry for being an absolute newbie in this. I've just got myself a Cisco 2950T from eBay for a bit of fun & learning at home.

Anway. I was just wondering if any standard RJ-45 to DB9 cable would work as the console cable?

I was given a 'console cable' but it doesn't seemed to fit into either the DB9 or the DB25 connector. It's got a 15pin Male connector on the other end with the markings '70-0820-03 EI G. 703) on the connector. Not too sure what this is for tho.

Just planning to visit the local store and see if I can track down an RJ45 to DB9 cable as a console cable. Would this work??

Thanks in advance.

A regular Catx jumper will not work.

Cisco console cables are "Rolled" .... meaning: pin 1 and the "A" side goes to pin 8 on the B side, pin 2 on "A" goes to 7 on "B", pin 3 on "A" goes to 6 on "B" ...

1 -- 8
2 -- 7
3 -- 6
4 -- 5
5 -- 4
6 -- 3
7 -- 2
8 -- 1

Good LUck

They gave you WHAT kind of cable? That sounds like a cable used in Europe for E-1 connectivity. Its definitely not a console cable, but if you happen to have a balanced G. 703 E-1 coming into your house it might be useful.

You should be able to pick a console cable up off of ebay pretty easily, since I've found its generally difficult to actually find one in an electronics store.

Hm... But I was planning on having some geeky fun with my switch this weekend! Thus I didn't want to try the eBay method.

Oh well I suppose I'll have to wait till Monday to 'borrow' one from work :D Hope the boys down in the workshop have some to spare!!!

A balanced G.703E-1 connection? What on earth is that???

Thanks for the info!

Its a European version of our T-1. The world can't agree on a standard for anything, why should phone service be any different?
