does the 2916 support vlan trunking or not.

is it true that you need a router with a fast ethernet port in order for vlan trunking to work and that 10mb/s ports will not do.

2900XL series should support both ISL and 802.1Q trunking.
From what I know, trunking is only supported on fast ethernet ports.

ok so as long as i upgrade my 2610 router's ios it should be possible to set it up as a router on a stick. right? i'm still concerned with the 2916 switches because i read somewhere that they will support isl and 802.1q trunking but only through some new modules and a software updates. btw where can i get new ios images for my 2610.

I think you can, we have it setup that way in a few test labs (not sure exactly on the model/IOS, but it's a 2600 series). Our switch is a 3500 series, but I am pretty sure you can vlan trunk the 2600's too.

You'll need to get a service contract on your router to get support / IOS updates. You may be able to purchase the update directly from Cisco -- give them a ring and see what they say.

Quick question on your 2916XL. How much flash memory capacity does it have, and what version IOS is it running? If I recall correctly, the 2916XL series never made it to the 8mb flash version of IOS. Meaning it couldn't run 12.0, and didn't support ISL/802.1q natively.

Unfortunately for you, your 2916XM does not support trunking unless you have a module installed that does support trunking. I see you have 18 interfaces, what are the other two? There should be a part number silk screened on the front of the module.
