It is a switch. There is no way to make it act like a hub.

Why would you want to turn it into a hub? A host does not care if it is attached to a switch or a hub. A switch just gives you WAY more bandwidth. Maybe you can explain what you're trying to accomplish and I can be of some help.

cheers,
spidey

replace that hub with the 2924 you have. use a crossover cable to connect the 2924 to the rest of the network.

no, make sure you use a crossover cable though. You'll get little green lights on the port that show good link status.

There is some other configuration you need to do on the switch. Get a good link light and we'll go from there.

Uh, check the config right spidey? ;)

2924XL uses cisco IOS so make sure the port is not shutdown. As a matter of fact, I would console into it and do a "write erase" just in case someone has configured vlans on it. And if someone put a password on the console, then you should look into the remarkably simple password recovery technique from Cisco's website. I think Spidey has it tattooed on his body somewhere...

Remember it is a 10mbps hub and a 100mbps switch so your port config on the switch needs to be 10mbps and half duplex. Try that and good luck to you. If that doesn't resolve it, check your cable and then check it again.

Do as CTR suggested and type "write erase" on the switch. That will return every port to autonegotiation and members of VLAN1.

Still don't understand why you don't get a link. Try crossover or straight thru.

What kind of port was connected on the hub? Standard host port or some kind of uplink? As far as cabling goes a switch considers every port a host port (MDI-X)

CTR - damn, where you been?

spidey

ps - password is not tattoed on my body, just burned in cerebral eeprom.

Spidey:
My wife had some complications and we had the baby early last month. So I've been busy with that. But everybody is doing well and we got the baby (Sarah) home from the hospital 2 weeks ago. I was gone from work for 3 weeks so I'm still catching up.

Raju:
How exactly did you come to possess this switch? Maybe it was discarded by someone else because it doesn't work? Hope not.

Can you check the speed/duplex setting on your port off the 4000? Maybe it was set to 10/half since you had that old hub there...

I'm sure you've tried different ports, right? Do you see a link light when you plug a PC into the 2900? You're going into a regular port on the 4000, right? Not some FE uplink?

What happens when you plug the cable from the 4000 into your PC? The same cable that goes directly into the 2900? Do you get link then?

If I have read your response correctly, you plug the cable from the 4000 into your PC and you get a link light. Then you disconnect that cable from the PC and plug it into the 2900. No link.

The cable running from your 4000 to your PC has to be straight-through to get a link light. The cable that links the 2 switches together needs to be a crossover cable in order to work.
