Cisco 1841 Flash Upgrade

Hey All,

I'm wondering if I can use a generic say a Sandisk CF card to upgrade the flash memory on my Cisco 1841?

Currently it's got the standard 32MB loaded which to me looks like a standard CF with a Cisco sticker on it.

Tempted to stick a spare 64MB CF that I have lying around, is this a bad idea??

Thanks in advance.

I did. They are formatted FAT32, so you can actually do all the copy stuff on your PC with a CF reader/writer.

A couple of cautions though:

Depending on the firmware image you're using, you (usually) should not remove the flash from a functioning in-production router: some images use the CF for temp files & tables ... pulling the CF will crash (or cause "goofy" operation ....)

When I copied all the files over, I either missed, or it was hidden ... the SDM interface (Java GUI) files. I ended up downloading and running the SDM files from CCO (which isn't a bad option, you can install them on the router, your PC, or both).

My 2811 has been running on an old camera CF for almost a year with no issues. The original is locked up & safe in my fireproof storage.

(BTW: this DOES NOT work for most other Cisco stuff (like Cat Sup modules)

Good Luck

Scott

Great stuff!! Thanks for the personal experience share, I'll go and dig up that old CF card!! And perform the upgrade!

I'll be sure to shutdown router before I do it!!

Thanks once again!!

Scott,

Yeah - cat sups are picky about cards. As long as they aren't being accessed you can pull them at will. The newer code however has fixed a lot of that.

If you really want to crash a cat...

1) with one session format the card
2) in another session create/move files

Cat goes 4 paws.

Ok I ran into a small problem last night. Dug out an old 128MB CF card. Tried to copy contents from existing 32MB card to 128MB with a card reader but the particular file 128MB.sdf just refused to copy.

Tried copying it in Windows and also "copy flash tftp" both complained that either can't read source or file doesn't exist?!

A little searching on the web tells me that it's a signature file, is there any trick to get this one copied across?
