Cisco 1142 Non-Mounted

How does the radio on the 1142 series orient? Do they have to be mounted on the ceiling, or will it being placed on a shelf be sufficient? I've been trying to get documentation on this but I'm coming up short.

It's a hemispherical antenna. "face towards enemy". Ceiling or wall mount, highest gain is away from the AP. Anything behind the 180 degree plane will suffer lots of loss.

Thanks spidey, that was my suspicion, I just wanted to confirm. Also, I guess its worth mentioning, that if in this instance it isnt easy for me to ceiling mount, so if i were to wall mount, or simply flip it over on a flat surface (cisco logo facing down, directly on a hard surface) Would it suffer any more substantial loss due to the close proximity of the device to a solid object?
