CIS Major w/ CS Minor

Hey Folks,
I'll be a sophomore at the end of this semester majoring in CIS with a minor in CS. I'm transferring universities to a school that has a strong CIS program within the state of Kentucky. My question to you all is this; am I picking the right minor to go with my major in Computer Information Systems? Or would I benefit from minoring in something different? I look forward to hearing from all of you.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Maybe a business minor would be better but ask the college, they would know best.

really minors mean nothing more than you took a couple extra classes in the subject so if your doing it for your resume its not going to be worth it.
If your looking to be a more efficient programmer I'd say continue with CS.
If your looking to expand your mind do so in something like math or english or another core subject that doesn't revovle around a specific profession.

CIS guys are who tell the CS guys what and how to do it.

So CIS guys run the indians.

Some schools won't even let you minor in programs that overlap too much.

My recommendation would be to minor in a different field. Business, finance, math, etc.

I'd do CS with a minor in something business-y myself. However, the stricter focus of CIS (if I'm thinking of the same definition you are) can actually work out rather well in your favour; it's hard to make serious money unless you find a particular niche to specialize in.

Not to sound overly arrogant, but that's the typical BS from people who can't cut it in the biz.

Consider that nearly 50% of software projects end in utter failure and abandonment with the primary culprit often being miscommunication of business logic between the business people and the software developer. Now you want to add a 10-hour gap in timezones, a significant difference in culture and communication skills, and the plopping of outsiders into the intimate world of corporate business logic... Yeah, great recipe for success there. As I told my VP of Marketing a few weeks ago after our outsourced CRM software venture was declared a failure, "I've never felt so secure in my job here [in North America] as I did today."

You might not be able to minor in CS because most schools do not allow much overlap at all. Most schools allow one or two classes of overlap between major and minor, so you can't really do stuff like major in physics and minor in applied physics.

A minor is more than a couple of classes.

Minors tend to be around 5 (300 and 400) level classes.

CIS major with CS minor means that you really wanted to do CS, but you suck at science and math.

That was a very nice anecdote. I would be very happy if that was the reality. I am seeing development jobs and now even PMO jobs being offshored to firms such as Infosys. Our business economy and multi national companies are becoming more and more global in nature.

That said, a second language would useful. Indian, Chinese, Russian, would be useful languages to learn.

I would do CS major with a CIS minor or business related minor.

Depending on what your intent was to do with a CIS major, maybe you could follow up a CS major with an MBA?

Sorry -- That's not the case here. Math and Science are my two strongest areas.

I don't like CS enough to major in CS. I would like to stick with the CIS major. The university I'm enrolled in allows CIS major with CS minor. There are no overlapping issues there. I have often considered a CIS major with a minor in something of business, but I don't know what it would be.

So why would you shy away from them?

I'm not shying away -- I just don't like CS enough to major in it.
