Circumventing max resolution on a monitor

Is there a way to display 1600x1200 on monitors spec'd for a native/max resolution of 1280x1024?

Quality is not a concern here; neither is refresh rate or response time. I simply would like to know if there is a workaround that would allow more raw window space.

PowerStrip or similar apps will let you force the resolution from your video card (there should also just be a 'show all resolutions' option in the Display control panel somewhere that will let you select things it doesn't think your monitor can support). However, if your monitor won't show it, there's nothing you can do.
