Bought a nice portable dvd player with their warranty because the salesman (sales-kid) said that it would cover anything except intentional damage.

Few weeks pass and somehow, according to them, it gets some "water damage" as per the service center, and they will not cover it.

I am going to argue with the manager this morning but they can bite me.

Anyone else have a similar situation?

go back and raise hell. get the name of the sales-kid and bring him into it. threaten to go up higher in the chain to get results. it sucks, but it seems that bitching and complaining gets results.

You have failed to tell us how it got water damage. Water damage is usually user error, whether intentional (spilling on purpose) or unintentional (not spilling on purpose, but spilling :p ) I sure as hell would deny your warranty too.

He worded it wrong...it should have been 'abuse' or 'accidental' damage, which water damage would not cover. Fact is you should know not to get i wet....

So if his house burned up, CC should replace it too b/c the fire is unintentional? He's just trying to get a warranty claim on something he should be denied.

Go throw it through the window of his car.

Here's a public service announcement! Everyone listen up!!!

Best Buy, Circuit City and (insert name of favorite electronics store here) sell you those extended warranties only to part you from more money!!! They are a ripoff!

I am not trying to shaft the store and it is only a couple of hundred dollars. I did not spill water on it as it worked perfectly and I used it every night. If I do replace it, it will be with the exact same model. And if they can show me the water damage, or how they deemed water damage, I will accept it.

The point is, what in the heck does the warranty actually cover? General product failure outside the warranty does not seem worth the price of the warranty.

I would be happy just to get my money back for the extended warranty, since a replacement mainboard is cheaper direct from Panasonic than it is from CC's repair center.

While it's crap that the salespeople are pressured to sell warranties and therefore mislead and/or lie about what's covered it's also the responsibility of the consumer to read the fine print and understand what is and isn't covered. In this case, you may not have received the fine print until months afterwards when they mail it out... at which time had you read it you could have gone back to the store and gotten a refund because they told you one thing and it says another.

Of course, if you complain enough they'll probably replace the DVD Player, circuit city that is, and not the warranty company.

Edit: And of course, reading last post, if there wasn't any actual water damage and the warranty company is lying, well, that sucks. Good luck.

For the most part they are, but I would definitely purchase them on the big ticket items. If I'm a fool for that, so be it.

We all know they make alot of money off of the warranties. That is not secret. Just like people say, always read the fineprint, but when you enter a store with your young children, you go in without the intention of spending 20 minutes or more reading a warranty before your purchase it.

As he was probably just born when I greaduated high school, it may not have been intentional but I was still misled.

I did not bitch when my RPTV was repaired right before the end of the extended warranty only to act up again 6 months later and cost me $400.

But I want them to teach their salespeople about what they sell, or don't offer a "insurance".

Thinking about it now, I might be able to gripe with Amex as they covered a P4 cpu when a pin broke off.

Ericboo, you seem to be well aware of the fact that you purchased an "insurance policy" for your DVD player. The salesman could promise you that the policy covers the moon but you know in reality that the terms of the policy apply to any repair work. So, have you read your policy (vice listening to the salesman)? What procedures exist for grievances (if you and CC don't agree on the cause of the damage)?

I think you're in the right.

Back before I knew better, I let CC trick me into buying an extended warranty for a $250 discman. (how's that for dating myself) The salesman assured me that with this super deluxe warranty, if anything ever went wrong, I could bring it in, they'd either replace it on the spot or if they didn't have any in stock would refund my $250. (I actually think at this time they might have sold 2 or 3 levels of warranty, and this was the "top level")

Anyway, long story short, a few months go by and the thing stops working off batteries. Take it in, they try a few sets of batteries in it, and are like "oh, ok, well, it must be broken, we'll send it in for service and you'll get it back in 6-8 weeks." I was like "WTF?" and explained what they told me, and the person at the desk laughs and explains there's no way someone told me that, how that would be completely against store policy, that there was no way they were giving my money back after 5 months, yadda yadda yadda.

That was that last time I bought anything at CC that wasn't on super clearance sale, a loss leader, price match, etc. I figure they actually lose money on me as a customer these days. Serves them right, slimy bastards.

There will always be sales people who overpromise, no matter what company wherever. I will tell you the salespeople are told to never lie about what it covers, the company and store do not want situations like that to happen. It does nothing but hurt them in the long run. Unfortunetely there will always be dishonest people out there, as for this guy it sounds more like bad wording then anything.

I know some people say hey they make money on this, don't buy it, but since when does a store sell really anything they don't make money from. Alot of people would rather pay a little more up front, then alot later if it breaks.

If it was not any type of abuse, go talk to the store, they may beable to help you. If it was any type of abuse (aka anything your fault vs the products fault) youll pretty much be out of luck.

I've worked for CC twice in two different decades (no I am no that old..in my 20s) but certain salespeople there will say whatever they have to so the customer can purchase the extended warranty. OOPS..I didn't mean to say extended warranty...we were almost branded on the ass not to use that verbiage. Anyway I have stood there and watched salespeople lie about it (sometimes because of ignorance...other times for personal/departmental gain). I've also worked in their computer tech department when customers come back with their broken crap ranting at me because somebody 4 years ago told them ANYTHING was covered under the warranty (doesn't matter if I wasn't even working there at the time). Anyway at the risk of babbling (sorry I was having bad flashbacks ;) ) - my point is that if you raise enough hell there you can probably get what you want.

LOL. Didn't mean to laugh at your situation but that is INSANE. The salesperson that told you that needs to be shot. That is very slimy indeed.

if there is no water damage, go back and raise hell and demand proof.

agreed.....I don't buy them on anything......some people have the mindset of wanting insurance/insurance/insurance for some piece of mind bs....you save alot of money in the long run never buying it....only buy insurance on what you can afford to replace....aka health insurance isn't bad or car insurance because generally most can't afford to replace it but on the same hand if you were smart you would get very high deductibles as the lower the deductible, the more you pay to them and the worse the deal is in the long run....
