Cingular's Samsung Sync

I currently have the Motorola Razr and I often have to reset the SIM chip. It's been happening for about a year now. Usually I catch it but late last week I had a mother-in-law who was screaming for me when her car broke down along a busy highway. She couldn't get to me because I was unaware the SIM chip needed to be reset.

I went into the store to have it looked at. The CSR at the store said that at the end of June I'm eligible for a phone upgrade. After talking with him a bit on how I use my phone he recommended me the Samsung Sync. I'm just wondering if it's going to be worth it. From a monetary aspect a new RAZR is going to cost me about $50 while the Sync is going to cost me about $30. $20 isn't going to make or break me.

So for those who have used the Sync, what are your feelings about it? What other phone would you recommend? I'm not looking to spend more than the $50 I could get with the RAZR.

IMO, Samsung makes some of the best phones around.

True, however IMO Sync (A707) is one of the crappiest phones they ever made. Besides being ugly (my opinion only) the phone is very cheaply made and has a crippled firmware. It works only with certain brand of memory cards and has a limit of 1GB. Having 3G is nice, but you can not tether this phone to use it as an external modem.

OP - I recommend you visit howardforums.com and read up on what other Sync users have to say about their phone. I would highly recommend you look at Nokia N75. You will pay more ($199.00 with 2 yrs) but it's well worth it. Since it's running Symbian S60 it's a true smartphone which can be customized with plethora of applications, but because Cingular considers it a music phone you can take advantage of an unlimited 3G data plan for only $19.95 a month. I have been playing with it for few days now and I'm loving making Skype-out calls, listening the internet radio, and doing all kinds of other cool things with it.

I have the Sync and I love everything about the phone itself. However, Cingular disables many of the features (voice dialing, tethering, etc) in the firmware and charges you for them. All of my previous recent phones had voice dialing enabled but for some reason they decided to charge for it on this phone. Being able to voice dial with my BT headset was a big deal.

The camera is really good, the internet speeds are outstanding and the high resolution screen is great.

All in all I would buy it again if I could find an unlocked one somewhere.

Wow Anymal, that Nokia looks awesome! If I wasn't married and had a 2 year old I might go out today and get that phone. Pretty sweet to make internet phone calls on that as well. Perfect for me because I have a brother who is stationed in Italy and haven't talked to him in ages. Could hook up a Skype connection to him and talk with him all the time. But alas, I am married and have a 2 year old. That Nokia has bling, but at $200 that's about $150 more than I want to spend.

I have a sync, I think it is total crap.

I'm already on my second one in 4 months, first one quit ringing, you would have to restart the phone to make it ring for an incoming call. Now the second one is doing the same thing, I have had days where I had to restart the phone 5 times in 1 day.

It seems to have really crappy reception, almost ever conversation seems garbled. And the other thing I hate is that it seems really difficult to hear the other person, the volume just doesnt seem to go high enough for me to hear well.

I hate it, I want to throw it in the street every time I have to pick it up.

I would suggest the LG CU500.

I just renewed my Cingular contract last month and was trying to decide between the CU500 and the sync. I read a bunch of reviews from numerous sites; although the sync got some decent reviews, the CU500 was pretty much better in every aspect (except the camera is a 1.3mp instead of 2mp). The CU500 is just about as thin as a razr but the interface is MUCH faster (I HATE motorola interfaces). I highly recomend the CU500; great call quality, ear piece is nice and loud, VERY fast interface and I think it is about $20 more or less than the sync.
