I'm looking for a family wireless plan and so far I've found that Cingular has one of the best deals (best bang for the buck) but I was wondering how their service was? Anybody out there has experience with them....do they have clear calls and how is reception in houses and buildings? Thanks.

yes it really depends on the area of coverage...

i am currently a voicestream customer, and the reception is really good in starting from downtown and outward to the North side

cingular is getting better reception in the south side of chicago

I?ve used it in the Northern Virginia area for awhile and haven?t really had any complaints, but I have never used my phone in buildings, mainly in my car or house. :)

Coverage here is pretty darn good (in RI) but the voice mail leaves a lot to be desired. I get messages a week later sometimes. Also there's the old call it, and watch it not ring routine, it happens quite often. But still good rates, and decent service, IMHO.

Cingular is horrible in the SF Bay Area from my experience. I was all too happy to drop them and go to AT&T, which has been a MUCH better experience.

Most people say it's a bad network with bad (and too busy) customer service.

And anything that's just infuriatingly bad is almost never worth a low price in my eyes.

If you value a fairly decent network and fairly low prices, but don't mind waiting 20 minutes to an hour to talk to a CSR, go with Sprint.

If you value OK prices, a decent network (better than Sprint, IMHO), and very quick customer service, go with Verizon.

I don't have personal experience with Voicestream, but since I know they have a roaming agreement with Cingular to over them in some areas, I'd be leery, despite their low prices.

From all I've heard and read about cellular service, you get what you pay for, nothing more.

The results of this AT poll, are fairly telling. As I type this,
  • 100% of Nextel voters are satisfied;
  • 91% of AT&T voters are satisfied;
  • 86% of Verizon voters are satisfied;
  • 85% of Sprint voters are satisfied.
The order of their ranking happens to also be the order of their respective costs, with Nextel being the highest, followed by AT&T, Verizon, and finally Sprint.

Voicestream and Cingular (AFAIK, the lowest cost providers) are also at the bottom for satisfaction. 72% of Voicestream voters are satisfied, and only 60% of Cingular voters are satisfied.

Cingular sucks in Champaign, IL.

My GF just signed up with Nextel, and I'm VERY impressed with the overall sound quality. Absolutely NO static, cutting in and out, or holes in the coverage... And that's just about EVERYWHERE in central IL since she travels around the state so much. Very impressive indeed.

Cingular is ok, with some spotty coverages in the Tri-State Area, just like most services. The good thing about Cingular is a call usually will go through, unlike AT&T. Ever tried to make a call on AT&T network during lunch hour?

If you count on customer service, Cingular is the absolute worst. You can only reach a CSR durning their business hours and never weekends. Imagine upgrading your plan, or having a technical difficulty or calling area and roaming questions. Out of Luck. The pre-recorded message tell you to visit cingular.com, which is just as bad and their customer service and is very slow. Oh yeah, questions goes to their email. They have no FAQ.

I've had cingular in Delaware for the last 3 or 4 months and never ever had any problems at all... very good coverage here, I've only had one dropped call ever. It all depends on the area though, talk to people you know in the area with cingular phones and see what they say about the coverage there.
