MY brother bought a prepaid sim from ebay.
Like this one

He was given a Nokia 6230 that the former owner did not pay her bill and the account was deleted.

Anyway hes asked me to help him get it working.

I was wondering if I had to unlock the phone for the new sim to work.
(He did not so any research and Im not sure whats got to be done) Is it easy as dropping the new sim in and call cingular to have it setup?

not completley sure what you're asking, but cingular phones come unlocked.

If the account was deleted, I'd imagine the sim card would be useless.

He bought a new pay as you go sim off ebay.
I am wondering if the phone has to be unlocked before the new sim will work. or just install the new sim.

The former owner of the phone he was given did not pay her bill and her account was deleted.

if it's a cingular compatible phone just replace the sim and it should be fine. the previous account doesnt have anything to do with the phone

unlocking a phone only makes it portable so you can take it to another carrier. The sim is probably trash since the account associated with it is ruined. I hope your brother didn't spend more than $30 (about what the phone is worth) becacuse if he did he got ripped off! Why didn't he just go to cingular the first time?

He needs to go to a cingular store and get a new sim FROM THEM and stop trying to cheap out over ebay. This is WAY too YMMV. He also needs to file a negative on the woman who sold him that fvcked sim card.

I went to an AT&T store to open up a pre-paid account, and they gave me the SIM card for free (i didn't need to buy a phone from them, already have one)... Why do you need to buy a SIM from ebay?

He did not get a bad sim. The phone was given to him, The lady that gave it to him did not pay her bills.
He bought a NEW sim off ebay and was wondering what had to be done to make it work.
The old SIM that was in the phone he trashed.
