Cingular has a seemingly hot deal on the Sony Ericsson T237 on their website for only $30 with free shipping. It's supposed to be used with their Pay As You Go service but you could probably use it as a backup phone if you have a plan. The service is also a good deal if you don't use your phone much. You can go as cheap as $25 every 3 months which comes out to ($8.33 / month). Hope someone finds this deal useful.

So you can buy as you go, and you can drop a Pre Paid card at any time? I understand the minutes expire etc.

They do expire if you don't buy more within the specified time. If you do, they roll over. From the site:
"Rollover® BalanceTM allows you to carry over any unused funds to the next month. Pay As You Go subscribers must refill their current balance before it expires in order to carry over an unused balance."

I was just about to checkout, but they added $11.xx in taxes to the total. I'm in CA, but tax should only be about $2.4x.

Weird, is there a handling charge?

what is difference btw the .10 and .25 plan besides the obvious price?

Looks to me like the 10 cent plan charges you $1 every day you use it (plus they say you get free mobile to mobile).

One is $.10/min plus $1 ONLY on days that you use it. The other is just $.25/min.

I think virgin mobile is a better deal for the occasonial user .25 minute for the first minute .10 after. Plus you only have to buy a $20 card every 90 days (not $25) of course their $30 phone is not as nice as the Sony Ericson.

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but can you unlock this phone to use with the T-mobile pay-as-you-go plan? I basically like T-mobile's $100/1000 minutes plan since the minutes don't expire until 365 days. Thanks in advance.

You mean .25 a minute for the first 10 minutes..... THEN it's .10 a minute after that.

Or if you already have unlocked GSM phones, another way is to go with the eBay route. Buy a preactivated SIM from eBay with airtime at a fraction of the full cost. You can also buy airtime on eBay for a couple of dollars less.

One problem is that if you might not be able to change your number if you bought a Cingular SIM off eBay because Cingular cannot unify all market's computer systems so your SIM can only be programmed with local numbers in whatever market it was originally sold in. So if somebody activated it in CA and you live in FL then you are stuck with a CA number.

Here is a question...

it was pointed out that the $.10/minute plans have unlimited mobile to mobile. Does this count as the voice usage in a day that would cause a $1 charge, or is it off network voice usage? (IE - could 2 people each buy a phone, buy minimum cards whenever required, and use them for unlimited calls to eachother without paying anything for them?)

The per month charge & # minutes per month, comes out the same with cingular or tmobile. T-Mobile won't do 850mhz.

Cingular $25/3-months / .25 = $8.33 per month & 83 minutes per month.
T-Mobile $100/12-months(1000mins) = $8.33 per month & 83 minutes per month.

Virgin uses Sprint Network, Cingular uses Cingular/AT&T GSM/GPRA, much better especially in rural areas.
