CIngular Phone Upgrade?

About a week ago my old pre-3G Cingular phone suddenly stopped seeing the Cingular network (it can now only access AT&T Wireless and it is the same story all over the Seattle Metro when I've tried to search for available networks). Not long afterward I got a notice in the mail that I can get a free upgrade to a new Motorola v180 or Nokia 6010 if I come into a Cingular store or call the number on the notice. I'm assuming that the two events are related and that Cingular is giving an incentive for everyone to move from older GSM tech to the newer 3G services because it is cheaper for them to support 3G calls.

The problem is that I've been having a heck of a time taking advantage of this deal. None of the stores in my area know anything about the offer and can't help me (although the letter clearly states in bold orange letters that I can get upgraded in the store). I called a couple of other stores in the area and they haven't been given any info on the plan either. My wife called the number on the letter this morning (the family plan is under her name) and the person she talked to was clueless as to what was going on.

Anyone else run into this? I think it is great of Cingular to offer this upgrade promotion (although I can see how it benefits them in the long run), but they really dropped the ball on the execution, since a large part of their company knows nothing about it. Anyone know how to actually get a new phone out of the deal without getting the runaround?

Cingular purchased AT&T Wireless some time ago, and their networks have been combined. AT&T's GSM phones only access "Cingular" networks now. for a while your phone would display whatever network was stronger, but they renamed the AT&T networks to "Cingular" relatively recently. Clearly Cingular is just labeling their old TDMA networks as AT&T. Regardless, there is nothing wrong with your phone and you're probably getting better reception now than ever.

your "upgrade promotion" is almost certainly nothing more than the standard free phones Cingular offers when you sign up for a new contract. anytime you accept one of those free phone things you have to sign a new contract (or contact extension) anyway.
