I recently discovered that i have the CIH virus, see my winzip wont install post, what steps shouldm i take to kill it, has anyone else had it, my email is BChico@msn.com, i would really appreiciate your help!
The CIH Virus, or Chernobyl, as the press has dubbed it, is one of the nastiest suckers around. It activates on the 26th of the month and there are three varieties. CleanCIH is the most effective killer I've found and it's only 18k in size! Boot off of a clean floppy and run this from the command prompt.
No, if you reformat your hard drive then the virus will be gone. If you format your hard drive make sure you don't have any floppy disk or cd-r that got infected with the CIH virus.
I think it is also important that you wrirte protect the floppy containing your sys and format.com files or the virus will worm into your boot disk. Some of the CIH strains can trash your BIOS, so whatever you decide to do I wouldn't fool around too long.
Try and install winzip again would be my answer...if you still get "header corrupt" messages, you still have problems (although I would download a new copy).
(He was originally having problems installing Winzip. The error message from the Winzip install pointed to the CIH virus possibility.)
Thanks alot guys i got the virus cleaned out and winzip installed, now just to figure out how to get the network neighborhood icon back on my desktop???
Congrats on the CIH cleaning. Just make sure you check ALL your floppies that you may have used during the infected period (which means all your floppies since you probably don't know how long it's been infected).
To get the Network Neighborhood icon, download TweakUI and install it.
TweakUI will install into the Control Panel. Open it up and under one of the tabs you'll see a list of icons that will appear (if you want) on your desktop. Put a checkmark in the next to the Network Neighborhood icon in the list.
