Cigarette Taxes In Chicago Up To $6.67 Per Pack Tomorrow, After County Tax Hike

WBBM Newsradio’s Nancy Harty reports a pack of cigarettes in Chicago will set smokers back $6.67 in taxes alone starting Friday, thanks to a $1-per-pack hike in the county’s cigarette tax.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said the projected $25 million in new annual revenue from the tax increase will go to the county’s hospitals and health centers, which treat more than 300 lung cancer patients each year.

To anyone thinking about buying cigarettes without tax stamps, Preckwinkle pointed out the county has tripled the amount of tobacco inspectors it employs.

The county raids hundreds of businesses each month due to illegal sales of cigarettes that do not bear the required tax stamps.

I'm completely fine with heavily taxing things that are not necessary/optional. And it may help people stop smoking.

It's regressive taxation because poor people tend to be smokers. Liberals should just adopt the new motto of "LOL FUCK POOR PEOPLE LOLOLOL"

Oh and lol @ Chicago. Isn't that also the city that doesn't let people defend themselves, so criminals with guns can run around completely unchecked?

Chicago still has a way to go before catching up to Canada. Cigarettes in Edmonton are $13 per pack.

Then lets have all soda be taxed up make it cost 6$ for a 12 oz. O lets go ahead and just tax all junk food to insane prices because it's not needed. O lets not forget about sport cars/suv time to triple the tax on them.

O fuck it lets just insanely tax everything that isn't needed. So that leaves us with bread, water, and hell we'll throw in shelter.. Everything else is gonna get a 300% tax fee. Hey you don't "need" it.

Smoking is bad but Big Government is a whole lot worse of a cancer than the cigarettes cause.

I watched my dad and my paternal aunt die from lung cancer from smoking. Tax smokers out of existance: I hate having the deal with the smell of it, and it's not in any way healthy. A life of drinking in moderation doesn't kill you. A life of smoking in moderation or not...can.

its just going to get higher and higher. with more and more people quitting smoking the tax revenue is going to go down. they need to do something to keep it high.

Yep, once they've taxed it virtually out of existence who or what is going to be their next target?

if this applies to all tobacco products then IMHO that is ridiculous, cigars and pipes shouldn't be held to the same standards.

So why not tax the hell out of alcohol? Soda? Junk food? Why is the target solely on tobacco, there are other things out there that also cause lots of health problems, so lets start taxing them too.

sorry about your family.

But if someone wants to smoke. why not? what happened to free choice.

or the libs favorite - letting people do whatever they want with their body.

furthermore, there are studies out that put the costs of smokers as neutral/ positive for society. By dying early the actually use less medicare & social security that offset the cost of attempting to cure the cancer. But once again, logic and reason will escape liberals.

I love this line of thinking by short-sighted non-economists. This is the same argument used in previous tax increases, and what happens? Spending is increased based on the expectation of new revenues, but then people quit or buy their smokes out of state/black market, and less revenue ends up coming in than expected. So, where do they make up the difference? Well, from everybody else, of course.

I'm absolutely for banning some things. I have no problem with smoking, except I have to smell it. I'd ban bad cooking if I could. :sneaky:

I'm down with this. The assholes downstairs in Apartment 303 smoke weed and cigarettes all the time. It is so bad that one of the residents in the building left a note on the front door that said "If you're going to smoke, please, put a towel underneath your door".

The towel doesn't help...because the smell is in the vents. Our living room has a strong weed and cigarette smell and I'm fucking annoyed.

Smoking is a disgusting, filthy, self destructive habit so I'm all for taxing the shit out of it.

There's nothing more revolting for a non smoker, than being in the vicinity of a smoker..

Actually, I take that comment back. There is nothing more revolting for a non smoker, than seeing the KIDS of smokers being subjected to the poisonous, odorous, toxic fumes of their retarded ass irresponsible parents D:
