Going out next weekend with the roommates, and we decided we were each gonna smoke a cigar for his birthday. I've never smoked any real cigars before (other than Black and Mild's and things like that), and I was wondering if there were any recommendations for a reasonably inexpensive cigar. I'm looking for something of a more "mild" cigar... thanks for helping a n00b out so he doesnt look like an idiot at the cigar store.

(hey, at least i can look like an idiot semi-anonymously here, right?) :)

Swisher Sweet Cherry?

In all seriousness - Macanudo Portofino. You can get it anywhere and it's pretty smooth but is a "real" cigar. And high-end enough nobody will laugh at you.

my first cigar when i was 18 (;)) was a romeo & julieta and from what i can remember, i enjoyed it. i usually also let first timers try out a cojimar because of its flavoring.

Actually true, I have a box sitting in my humi. Ashton Cabinet would also make a good 1st chouce albeit a pricey one.

any decent cigar store worth it's salt will be glad to help you out.

decent beginner ones (mild):
CAO
bacarrat
Vista de cuba
Reo
romeo y julieta

i'm just starting out too but my local cigar shop is awesome and helps me out a lot. these are cheaper cigars too, so you won't have to spend a lot of $$ to find out if you like it or not. :)

good luck!

P.S. are there any other good online cigar retailers?

I like romeo y julieta
macanudo
cohiba

Hell, I like all good cigars. I prefer darker tobaccos. It's all personal preference.

I used to buy them locally (in Los Angeles) but the 35% Tobacco Tax makes it very tough, so I started buying them online. The site that I've been using recently is famous-smoke.com. Great prices. lots of selection. They start their weekly specials on Fridays, and end on Fridays too, so on Fridays there are twice as many cigars on sale.

Bacarrat is a good beginner cigar (a mild cigar with a sweet cap). Their La Floridita bundled cigars (means that they come bundled, and not in a box) are great for the money, although they need to sit in a humidor for a few weeks to mellow out (when they are "fresh" they are a little harsh). The cigar that I smoke mostly is a Punch London Club size in the maduro wrapper. Basically, Punch is a more full bodied cigar, but the Maduro wrapper (the really dark brown wrapper) combined with the smaller size (5" x 40) makes it full flavored and slightly sweet, but not over powering. Plus you don't need an hour and a half to smoke them. And these run only $29 for a box of 25. Another good buy is the 5 pack of Macanudo Hyde Park's. They are large robusto size cigars with a great creamy mild taste and they run $15 for the 5 pack (these sell in LA for about $7-8 each).

The best thing to do is order by the box. Get yourself an Igloo cooler and order some type of humidification device. My wife bought me a 50 cigar humidor (which I filled very quickly), so I started using a small cooler that I leave at the office to store a box of the Punches in. That's all I was planning on doing. Now I have 3 boxes in there, plus about 50 loose cigars. I can get out of hand very quick!

Agreed, just tell them you're just starting out and ask them to recommend a good mild cigar.
