Now that's its warming up I'd like to start having a cigar every once in a while. Can anyone suggest some good brands to try? I'm looking for something not too expensive (couple dollars a cigar or so) and pretty smooth. Thanks.

Where exactly are you located? US/Canada?

If Canada, you can get some Cubans that are quite reasonably priced... even the Cohibas aren't all that expensive up here.

Sadly, I'm in the US. Stupid embargo. The closest I can get to Cubans is having a friend bring some back from Germany some time next year.

In that case, Montecristo cigars from the Dominican Republic are quite good. They are made from tobacco that as seedlings came direct from Cuba.

They'll fit right in your price range, and are miles ahead of the garbage that the variety store sells. :)

not too expensive and a couple dollars are two different things. Not too expensive is $10-$20. Couple dollars is dirt rolled up in a rag.

Find a cheap Churchill. They're somewhere between $10 and $20 and you'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

If you really want smooth, you need to go with some Ashtons or Savinellis. Very choice.

I didn't mean two dollars literally. I was thinking basically up to $10 but I could be persuaded to spend a little more for quality. ;) I'll probably just get one of each kind to try and see what I like.

Size is a matter of taste. Whatever brand you choose, look for either a robusto or a churchill. They are both (usually) the same guage, but the churchill is much longer.

I used to work in a cigar store here in Canada. Montes sold very well as did Romeo y Juiletta. Most good cigars are made with genuine Cuban tobacco, although a number of Cuban families that left Cuba during the revolution took plants with them to continue the tradition. They are good too.

In Canada you can also get Bances and Punch which are made with Cuban tobacco. We also had these little cuban cigars that we sold for $4 each and they were good too.

For a good selection of Canadian cigars, try here : CanadianCigar

Also don't forget that there can be serious consequences for taking Cuban cigars across the border. The law states up to 25 years in prison or something to that effect. Usually they just confiscate them and destroy them in front of you.

I don't like punch cigars. They are poorly rolled and fall apart too easily. the tobacco is flakey. Stick with Montecristos

Hey, re cigars, if new to cigars and their wonderous flavors, do not inhale (cubans especially) as they are strong and not meant to inhale. I would suggest a Diplomatico for your first cuban, as they are milder yet still have great flavor. Others are correct, the Romeo y Julieta and Monte Cristo are great cubans.

Learn to smell, taste and experience the cigar, and do not smoke fast, as it heats up the cigar. Take your time, and enjoy it after a good meal. Maybe with a coffee or better yet, a scotch or brandy. If you don't have a humidor, only get a few and keep in a bag or container, to keep the moisture. Prefereabley get a small humidor and then you can keep them the right temp and humidity.

oh yea, one more thing. Caution on the minis (real small cigars) as many are a tight roll and offer poor air draw through them. Even the real fine cuban ones. Try a Corona size for first attempts, just right.

Whomever reccomended Canadian Cigar, good choice - we appreciate it, and will make you proud!.

Enjoy
